I'm in the process of installing a chiller in my setup because I just upgraded to MH lighting and my water temp is getting way too hot. I'm also gonna install fan in the canopy to help with the air temp..........My question is, should I be pushing air into the canopy for the my room or pull air out (in other words, which direction should i install the fan??)
Here is a photo of my setup:

I think the chiller will take care of the water temp but I dont think its good for the equip for the air to be ultra hot in the canopy. Right now I have to always leave my canopy doors open and its making me crazy! (actually, it bothers my girlfriend much more than me so it makes HER crazy and in return she drives me crazy

The problem with pushing air in is ...you have to have a sufficient opening for it to come out. If its not big enough...then its not effective. If you are pushing air in ..it is called positive pressure.. We use this technique in the Fire service. If 1 is going in and one going out..and they are exactally the same size opening....then you are moving the air more efficientally....hence exhausting the hot air better..... Just my 2 cents.

I kind of felt the same way...........I wasnt sure that pushing in air with nowhere for the old air to excape would be very effective. I'm gonna go with the "out" fan first and see how that works. Im gonna install it about 3/4 of the way up the canopy or possibly in the ceiling that way it would vent right into the attic. I could always install a vent towards the bottom to let fresh air in if needed

Vent one side and have the fan on the other side pulling the air out. It will suck cool air in with the neg air pressure. This is how we do it in electrical panels most of the time. Or we use two fans one to blow air in and another to suck it out.

Will the fan be any where near the dry wall? If so, you have to have it suck in, otherwise it will rott your dry wall over time. All of my fans suck in and have multiple areas to blow out.

One other thing. The best thing I ever did was to also hook up a dimmer switch to the fans. In the summer I can switch them on high and in the winter on low to cut noise. Mine all come on with the MHs. If you do this, you must use a fan dimmer and not a light dimmer!

Positive presure ventilation is the most effecient way to move air. You push air in and let it escape out on its own. There was a post above with sizes and he is correct. I would use a 4in fan blowing in and a 3in hole for the exit. This will actualy pressurize the space and allow for a faster flow of air comming out. We do it all the time at house fires. Also I have the same set up on my attic for ventilation, Just bigger.
