Instant Ocean Question

I am starting my new tank, just added all of the 60lbs of instant ocean (says makes up to 200 gallons) in my 125 gallon tank (72x18x23inch) and my salinity is just getting around 1.020. Anyone know if this is normal why it would take so much salt initially? All I have in there so far is some rock. Thanks!

How long detween when you added it and when you measured the salinity. It may not all be in solution.
How are you measuring salinity.

I'll check again tonight that will be 24 hours. I have plenty of flow and am using a refractometer that has been calibrated.

Waited about 30 hrs now... now it is lower than 1.020, reading at 1.017. There is a lot of flow in there, running a Jebao PP-15 at full speed and an FX-6. Only thing I can think of is I have about 50lbs of live rock I had soaking in freshwater as I changed water out daily. Maybe the rock is absorbing the salt? I have another 60lbs of instant ocean on the way....

R u cleaning and drying the refractometer correctly? Any left over fw used to clean it will throw off the sg

Just keep checking it for the next day or two. Could be some undesolved salt in the rocks if it got dumped in pretty fast.

Was the salt clumpy at all when you poured it in?

Yeah something went obviously wrong somewhere...I'm still not sure why u added a 200 gallon amount of salt to a 125 gallon tank...I assume u kept adding after seeing the salinity was low and didn't just dump in 60lbs of salt initially? My assumption would be there are giant clumps of salt that hasn't dissolved...probably unlikely seeing as I'm sure u would see that lol

I've had it take a little longer when mixing it that way but not more than 48 hours.

May have got a bad batch. Wouldn't be the first time.

Either that or much of the mix precipitated out of solution due to over mixing. Do u see any white residue on the rocks or sand bed?
