Interesting Trip To The Big City

I really struggled whether to share this or not, but in the end, I believe I should. I went to Tucson for some business, last night, and decided I would go to one of my favorite restaurants, La Parilla Suiza (The Swiss Grill), before going home. While waiting for my order I figured I'd drive to a tool store before they closed, as I had driven 90 miles to go to Tucson, I needed to get everything I came for. It took a while longer than I had assumed and I hurried back because my daughter called and said the food was ready. I pulled into the lot (which was packed) and upon rounding the end of a row 2 gentlemen were strolling slowly across the lane. I waited for them to clear the lane and hurried to get the open spot. Let me stop here and mention that I am 50% disabled and must use a cane as my back injury causes weakness in my left leg and my upper body. As I get out of the car, 1 of the gentlemen came running up with a (seriously) 12" bladed Bowie knife and pulled it out of the sheath. He dropped the bag containing his food and said "What's up, Homie?" I said "nothing, what's going on?" He said I'm gonna kill you, Homie". I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911 and 2 people walked out of the restaurant (and RAN as fast as they could and peeled out of the driveway). He said "I'm gonna kill you before the cops get here". I was trying to talk to the operator but not break eye contact with him, but said "well those witnesses and the cops know who you are now". I was bluffing, the chicken$#!* couple had already left and the cops didn't know who the heck this guy was. It worked and he said, "I'm gonna get you, Homie" and ran to his vehicle 50 yards away and left before I could get the license. The 911 operator said "Is the person still there?" I said, "he's leaving now". She said "please wait OUTSIDE AT THE FRONT DOOR UNTIL THE OFFICER ARRIVES". I had my daughter box my meal and pay the bill and I waited for 25 minutes and after I saw a CRV that looked like the one he was in drive by, I had my daughter and son-in-law run to the car and I took off. 34 minutes after I called 911, I got a call from the dispatcher who said, "Mr Ellis are you at the restaurant? The officer just got there and needs to know where you are." I said "With all due respect Ma'am, he said he would get me and I waited for 25 minutes on the outside, in a dimly lit parking lot. I am not going wait for him to bring his gang friends and finish the job when he sees no cops are there. I am on my way back to Cochise County as fast as I can." She said "Alright, have a nice evening."
I will not lie, when he was running up on me, I was as frightened as I had ever been in my life. But that lasted for about 10 seconds, then I was angry to the point of rage at myself. I live in a state where it is my right to carry a gun and if I had done that, I would have never been vulnerable to this guy. I am NOT making a political point, but rather a personal one. If he would have continued, I'd be dead. And the great irony is that I had the means to stop it, but left my personal weapon at home and left myself vulnerable and at the mercy of the POS gang punk. I WILL NEVER MAKE THAT MISTAKE AGAIN!

I have gotten away from carrying around town because I live within a thousand feet of a school so leaving the gun in the truck isn't an option and I don't like to have people see me going to and from the truck with the gun in my hand. Might have to rethink that. Too many bad stories going around similar to yours. There are some real whack jobs out there.

the other way to look at this is, had you been carrying a gun, you might have shot and killed that person.
2 sides to all coins.

I'm glad you are okay and your famly is safe. I can't imagine the police asking you to stand outside to wait for them like that. The punks know their town and they know how long it takes for the police to get there. Your Guardian angel was working that night.
As much as I hate guns, you are absolutly right...just seeing it, and he would have skittered away like a little rat.

Contrary to popular belief, my life's goal is not to kill someone and unless he carried through and physically assaulted me, I wouldn't shoot him or anyone else. But I think unless you have had someone coming at you, with the intent to kill you, it is very difficult to understand how dangerous and frightening it is. Also, think about this: a cop in that situation has the right to use deadly force. But anyway, it bothers me that I put myself in a position that I had to depend on the goodness of a gang punk for my life. That's not a safe bet.

This was last night. Still pretty shaky. I really thought I'd handle a situation like that better. It is strange how I felt so powerless and scared. I am really ashamed, but maybe my story can help someone else who finds themselves in a similar situation.

I wouldn't want to kill someone but I sure wouldn't shed a tear to learn someone who was threatening a stranger with a Bowie knife was removed from the gene pool.

I have been robbed at gun point in the city of Chicago; four punks walked me and my husband into the alley. We did as we were old, one of them wanted to shoot us anyway..We ran when they let us go to the nearest bar around the corner. There is no way to respond except feeling powerless and afraid...my husband told me later he might of tried to wrestle the gun away but he was fearful for me. Without me there he may have been shot playing macho man.
You had no weapon, you kept your head and managed to bluff the idiot into rethinking his actions...I think you did great under those circumstances.

I am glad to hear you are ok. Those little random acts of violence are the ones that do scare me, just no way to protect yourself. Ironically, I believe yesterday was random acts of kindness day. Maybe he was dyslexic (kidding).
Today could have been taken from you, indulge yourself!

When I was a kid a family member was killed by a punk with a knife. They had been shooting pool at the local bar, not even for money and one of the guys was mad because he got schooled in front of his girl. He followed my cousin home and knifed him in his front yard.

You know, the verbal assault is in some ways worse than the physical threat. I've had a gun pointed at me during a pharmacy robbery. I handled it. I didn't LIKE it (scared the bejezus outta me), but I dealt with it. The guy didn't actually SAY he was threatening my life, though.
I know it may sound silly, but if that guy had pulled out his gun, pointed it at me, and actually said "I'm going to kill you," I'm sure I would have been in a similar state as you were. The verbal threat is somehow more immediate, more tangible, to me. Weird, huh?
Needless to say, I'm glad you're all right!! Stupid mofo was probably just trying to impress his buddy in some weird way. Some people's children.......

I am a big guy, both up and around. I have to use crutches to walk because of my bum hip and leg. These are the heavy duty rascals. Someone pulls a knife on me they might be in for the shock of their life. One of these monsters would break a bone pretty easy.

If i was carrying i would've shot the punk when he pulled the knife .. Get real people! One or two less scumbags on the streets and a powerful message sent to their "homies".

I went to the gun store Saturday and bought a CZ83 compact 9mm. A Sierra Vista cop who works there told me it's a great short range weapon and perfect for conceal-carry and absolutely reliable. I am now wearing an inside the trousers holster. I pretty much always leave my shirts untucked and it is completely invisible. The SV officer told me that even if there is a "no guns" sign posted, if it is seen all they can do is ask me to leave, so to keep it on me at all times. He also said (and this is something I had never thought about) to keep it loaded and half-cocked at all times. The worst personal protection firearm is one you have to draw and chamber a round before using, as it allows perpetrators time to disarm and then use the weapon on you. Never had a double-action auto pistol before. It's really cool.

I have a Rossi snub nose 38 that would make a nice carry piece. Thing is if I get a CCW all the sudden there is a paper trail of me being a gun owner. I really don't want to identify myself as a gun owner.

That's what's great about Arizona joining Vermont and Alaska in not requiring CCW permits. Just buy and pack, no BS. I really don't mind the process of CCW permitting, but I really think it undermines the 2nd Amendment "the right to bear arms shall not be infringed". But sheeple do whatever the government tells them to. Anyway, another topic for another day. I will never be caught with my trousers around my ankles again.

The concealed weapon permits are a bit of a joke. I remember when I took the class years ago, three people slept through it, one lady nursed her screaming child through it, no one, myself included really paid attention. It does little more than provide a false sense of security and just a few hoops to jump through.
