3. $74,403
4. $174,000

2 Is the average salary of a US citizen
3 Is the average salary of a Federal employee

If you list the total compensation package it gets even more ridiculous.
No doubt. Until the politicians got in bed with the unions Federal workers got the great benefits and all the holidays as a trade off for slightly lower pay than the private sector. Now it's just insane. Something like 40% higher pay than the private sector plus all the benefits.

I knew I should have gone in to fed government rather than state....
It is true that soldiers don't start out with much, but many also do have a lot of benefits that all the others don't have...like free health care, free housing, free college, free training, and some of these benefits extent to the soldier's family. All of which they do deserve. Also, they have a lifetime career, if they want it, with a sure opportunity for advancement.
Congress salary is a joke. What the heck do they do?

Soldiers do get the housing but the college benefits aren't the greatest anymore. Health care is good but there is no sure career advancement. You can stay your 20 and get a pension but moving up in rank isn't automatic. I'd say when you consider the housing which is about a grand a month depending on location, and the medical and pension they really don't do too bad but compared to what other federal employees get they are being hosed over.

Wait a minute...the lowest ranking member of the military makes about 33,000 a year....where did you get this info? Unless they have included national guard pay into this annual salary, which would drastically change the income per year per individual.

Where are you getting 33,000/yr. The lowest ranking member of the military (Single/E1/less than 2yrs) doesn't even clear 20,000/yr

The lowest ranking member of the military (E1 with less than 2 yrs) doesnt even clear 20,000/yr. Even a E4 with over 3yrs barely clears 25,000/yr.

My son has been in just over 4 years, hasn't moved up a bunch but isn't at the bottom. His monthly Salary is 2200.00 plus the benefits.

My bad, you are correct. My math was way off. E1 makes around 15,000 a year...granted once you complete boot camp you typically increase rank...then you make about 17,000 a year.

My kid has test phobia so hasn't advanced as fast as he could have. He did just make the sniper squad, about a month after he was home for R&R and was told his wife was divorcing him ans has a boyfriend. Gotta watch that boy like a hawk when he gets back stateside.
