You can buy the current version of the Iphone without a service contract. When the new one comes out in July, you have to get a phone contract when you buy the phone. But you're paying $100 more just to get the camera feature. I think the camera is only a 1.2 meg or 2 meg camera on the phone. I must admit it takes pretty good pictures, but you can find a nice 5 megapixel camera with more features for the $100.

Best customer service you can ask for. They can tell you an answer for sure.
The new iPhone (the 3G) comes out in mid July and is only $199. I think I hafta get one and I already HAVE an iPhone, lol.
Anyway, the apple sight makes no mention of the service contract. As for the iPhone currently available, you need the ATT contract just to get into the phone, unless you get it illegally unlocked, but then you can never upgrade the phone...

okay first of all, you can unlock it, and no one will know if its copy right infringement once you do it. and second, if you do unlock it, you can still upgrade it.

I owned three, and not one would let me gain access except through a contract with AT&T.
You cannot get past the first screen without AT&T

So far this is all I've found...
Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) and first-generation iPhone (8GB) purchases. Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

From this sight

yeah well, you can get an iphone to work on any service provider you want, verizon requires some hardware manipulation, but other carriers require a couple software steps and a switch of a simcard for service. so.....
it's just been revoked.

go there, and you will have an unlocked iphone that is jailbroken. (jailbroken means you can add applications to it for free, and change what it looks like) posting examples soon.
or

there are something like 5,00 themes you can pick some. some better than others. i showed u my 2 favs.
game systems like (yes, these work and you can have any game for that system on your iphone/ipod touch)
super nintendo
NES
gameboy advance
Game boy color
sega genesis
playstation 1
and literally thousands more basic apps ranging from graphing calculators -> board games (scrabble) -> card games (texas hold'em) -> classic arcade games (phoenix and pacman) -> mmicrosoft office tools (word processor, slde show, and mobile excel).
so yeah.... it's just been revoked.

OK, this is what's legal...
To start using your iPhone, you must activate it using iTunes and sign up for a new two year AT&T wireless service account. You can transfer your current phone number to iPhone, or get a new one. If you already have an AT&T or Cingular account, you may be able to upgrade your account to work with iPhone. You must be at least 18 years old to open an AT&T account.
And this is what I said...
unless you get it illegally unlocked,
You are obviosly confusing the iPhone with a phone. It is not a phone, although it has almost all of a cell phones capabilities. It is a software. You can hack and finagle pretty much any software, but without consent from the manufacturer, it's considered illegal.
And your right, you can get the upgrades, all from the same place that tells you how to unlock it. You can never simply hook it into iTunes and do it the way it's supposed to be done.
Nor will you have apple's support or warrenty.
Seems like a lot of work, but I guess if tMobile is THAT much cheaper than AT&T, then I can see how some people might risk it.
I'm glad I didn't when my son threw it at the ground, shattered the face and the apple store transferred all the info to a brand new phone...for free.

well, if you had done it, it wold be no problem. if they can plug it in and transfer files, that means you could hook it to your computer too. so if you want to bring it to the apple store, just simply delete the files that were added by jailbreaking. basically i can connect my iphone to my computer and view all of its inner files and inner workings. again, you need to jailbreak it. as long as the apple store ant see what you have done, you are fine, and you can make things go away my trashing them.

going the "tizzo" way means the same old boring black backround, with the same old icons, the same boring apps, and the same "slide to unlock" text. i can change the look of mine, and my slider is a pacman eating dots as you slide it acrosse, eventually swallowing a ghost.

OK, the first part, I'm not even gonna respond since I used the word illegal in my first post, and the second part...
Makes no sense at all.
But either way. I looked up similiar plans (just now) for TMobile and AT&T, and as I said, TMobile may be worth it to some. I mean, not everybody can swing an extra 15 bucks to stay legal.

I guess not even a ..."graphic designer".LOL

That's not the "Tizzo" way, that's the Apple way...
And some of us have grown past, pac-man.

I think I can clear up some misconceptions:
Right now, the 'original' Iphone is still available to purchase and you can take it out the door without signing up for a service contract with AT&T. The 8gig is $399, and the 16gig is $499. You can 'jailbreak' the phone to add a variety of small Java applications to the phone that are not available from Apple. There are literally hundreds out there, from GPS-type apps, to games, to video wallpapers, a level, various cameras, it goes on. There are 'applications' on various sites that will do the jailbreak process in about 5 minutes. One of the advantages of performing the 'jailbreak' is you can use any SIM from either AT&T or T-Mobile in the phone. For instance, right now AT&T has no business phone plans for the Iphone. I get large discounts for having 50 or more phone plans with AT&T with my business. After jailbreaking my Iphone, I can take the SIM out of my MotoRazr, pop it into my Iphone, and the phone works fine. I'm not stuck with a plan I don't need, and I can use the existing plan I have. If for any reason I have a problem with my Iphone, I just plug it into ITunes, do a restore, and it puts the phone back into the condition I bought it. Neither AT&T or Apple will know the difference. You are not physically damaging the phone by jailbreaking it. All you're doing is modifying the OS that runs the phone to take advantage of running free apps on it.
Coming July 11th, is the new Iphone 3G. It will have a faster network, GPS capability, and yes, cheaper. The 8gb Iphone will be $199, and the 16gb (in either black or white) will be $299. HOWEVER, you CAN NOT just buy the phone and take it out of the store. When you purchase the phone, you will have to activate a minimum 2-year contract with AT&T at the store. The minimum plan is $70/month. This is how AT&T is 'subsidizing' the initial price of the new Iphone. Yes, the new phone is $200 cheaper up front, but the phone plan is a mandatory extra $20/month over the current Iphone minimum plan ($50/month). So basically you'll pay an extra $240 a year for the new phone over the current Iphone. Multiply that times two, and the cost is $480. So you can basically add that to the price of the phone - $679 for the 8gb, and $799 for the 16gb. Granted the new Iphone will have faster downloading capabilities, is a little thinner and lighter, has a normal headphone jack (no proprietary headphones at $30), and included GPS capability where you are supposed to be able to track other Iphone 3G users that you know.

am i the only one who thinks that the iphone and touch have way too little memory? the only one that i might consider is the 32gb touch, but then i think of how many corals i could buy with $500

I agree with nisky. I will continue to wait for the 32 gig. How many songs do I need to carry? All of them. I want my full library so my iphone can replace my ipod and have room for pictures as well.
Cuurently, I have all my tunes from the Napster days as well as my cd collection on my ipod. I love the ability to drive down the road and pull up anything I have. You never know when the urge will strike to crank up "Drop that Bass" from DJ Magic Mike.
