so if i buy the new model thats coming out in july, i can get the phone to work on t-mobile?
nobody is sure yet. Tizzo says you will have to sign up for AT&T at the Apple Store, but i have heard rumors from very reliable sources saying you won't have to, and in that case you could get T-Mobile.

Coming July 11th, is the new Iphone 3G. It will have a faster network, GPS capability, and yes, cheaper. The 8gb Iphone will be $199, and the 16gb (in either black or white) will be $299. HOWEVER, you CAN NOT just buy the phone and take it out of the store. When you purchase the phone, you will have to activate a minimum 2-year contract with AT&T at the store.

BTW, that statement came from my business AT&T rep. However, as soon as the Iphone 3G hits the market, the 'jailbreakers' will be on it and have it opened in a day or two. Once that occurs, I'm sure you'll be able to use a T-Mobile SIM in it like you can on the current Iphone. But I'm wondering what functionality will be lost? AT&T is still the exclusive provider for the Iphone. They will be using the 3G network to their advantage. Does T-Mobile even use or have access to the 3G network? If you do use T-Mobile, will you be able to use the onboard GPS functionality that comes with the new phone, or is that service only available on AT&T? I have a feeling these phones are going to become unbreakable. As they upgrade the firmware, they add more locks to the OS. Especially since Apple wants to start selling the Java apps on Itunes.

can i buy an iphone and not get the phone service on it? the reason i want to do this is because the itouch dosent have a camera and the iphone does.
When you buy a phone generally they make you sign a contract, with that contract they give you a discount on the phone generally 150 to 200 dollars. With the old iphone they didn't give such discount. With the new phone they do. Either way. Why not just buy a camera? For the difference in price you can get a decent camera that is worlds better than any camera they put in a telephone.

does anyone have experience with using the old iphone model with t-mobile?
I don't, if you are a AT&T customer for 90 days you can call em up and ask for a lock code. And they will give it to you, if not, you can find those codes online for a fee.

I'm guessing the reduced price supports having to sign up with ATT when you buy the phone. The data rate being raised from $20 to $30 for unlimited and the service is to make up for the price of the phone. I could be wrong, but logic says that is probably going to be the case.

AT&T calls it 'subsidizing the cost'. Pretty much the same concept when you get that $250 Motorazr for free if you sign up for a new 2-year contract.

what is a lock code?
It is a code you punch in at a certain point that "unlocks" the phone so it can be used with different carriers.
Phones are programed so they can only be used with the carrier like AT&T. They have a code that turns off that programming.

Yeah, basically, the contract in its intent is designed so you have the phone long enough for them to recoup the cost of the phone and then make a litte money. It started back in the day with a company called primeco. They released a phone that cost about 600 dollars. But you got it for 100. They figured that a 600 dollar phone is to high of a price point for most people so they sold the phone at a loss. But the figured people would pay a monthly bill with the price of the phone built into the rate plan. Unfortunately they figured out that people would just stop paying since they had no reason to stay. I'm not sure who decided to do the contract, but it soon evolved into signing a contract. That is why I thought it was such a rip with the Iphone, they didn't subsidize the cost of the phone. And yet you were still forced to sign a contract.
Anyway this phone cost is why you see all rate plans basically stacked at the 40 dollar price point.
Then once you've had your phone for 2 years they start making real money because they have recouped the price of the phone and their only cost is the network.

All those turkeys do it. T-mobile does something a little different but I don't know how that works.
