Is 12 hours okay to mix saltwater for WC

I know most people here mix their saltwater for 24 hours before a water change. I don't have much time this weekend and would like to do it tomorrow morning. That would be only 12 hours. Am I okay? I did a fish last night(begaii cardinal).

If you have a strong power head in the bin, and you check all of the readings of the bin in the morning, then you should be alright. Please don't do it all of the time though!

Just don't put in any of the unmixed residue left down at the bottom, and I wouldn't make this a regular habit.

I definitely agree!!!! The salt and water mixture has to have a gas exchange. While the salt mixes it releases carbon dioxide. It is replaced with oxygen when it is well mixed. If the water is not well mixed then the carbon dioxide is released in the tank. This would cause a huge problem.

wow, great subject! Working on the same question, but can wait more than 12 hours. I have heater and maxi jet 1200 in 10 gallons. Plan to have that for at least 20 hours. Like to hear more on the gas exchange. My maxi is pointed at the top and it is moving well. Will keep an eye on the advise!

I would keep it pointed at the bottom, to ensure all of the mixture gets mixed. The gas exchange will happen naturally and work it's way up and out on it's own as the mix takes place. But if you leave residue at the bottom, it won't ever mix, thus when you dump/pour/pump it into your tank, the exchange will happen then (not a good time).

Point it to the bottom. A maxi 1200 in a ten gallon is a whirlwind. The gas exchange is not hard to understand. As the salt dissolves it lets of carbon dioxide. The water needs to be aerated to put oxygen back in the water. Just because you do not see the salt on the bottom, does not mean that it is fully dissolved.

I love it when I'm on the same page as Sep

Makes me think I'm doing something right, cause there are days when I just want to get out my fishing rod and drop a hook in this tank and give up.
