Would it be a good idea to keep a reef tank in my bedroom. I am setting up my first tank (52Gal) and am worried about the noise of the pumps (Filter,Skimmer,Powerheads) keeping me awake. Anyone done the same??

Not knowing what your setup is, I can only tell you that if you have a skimmer you will have some noise.

i'm thinking about doing the same. it seems that unless you want to be up all night, it would be worth your while to not only try to dampen the sound coming from aquarium components as much as possible, but to also look for quiet components. hope this helps...

i've had pumps running on my freshwater tank in my bedroom, when i got my salt water was already used to pumps, i go right sleep.

it would be coool...but it might sound like a waterfall at first..and you have to get used to the humming from the pumps...once you get used to the noises, the sounds should put you right to sleep.

fish tanks in the bedroom seem to do 1 of two things... some people find the sound of the pumps and the water very relaxing; others find that the sound of the water makes them have to pee all the time :p

i have had my 33g set up in my room for over 10 years now, wouldn't trust it any where else in my house :) . it has been sw for approx. a month now. i really have no complaints about it being in there except that when i got lazy and didnt fill the tank after evaporation (w/ fw) it got kind of noisy, but that was my own fault. all you really have to do is tweek what you got. for instance, my air pumps needed to be padded a little bit to dull the vibrations. i have no experience with skimmers yet but have heard that they can get a little noisy, but i cant say for sure. it really depends on the type of filters you have. a back pack will give off a little water fall noise, but i find this very relaxing. I have a fluval cannister which is very quiet, and as for my power heads, they are submerged so you dont hear them at all. the only other down fall i can recall is when you have to do a water change or work insde the tank, you have a tendency to get a bit of water on the floor but this can ofcourse be avoided by putting a towel down or something. IMO i think it is not a bad idea in the least. good luck! :D

Ive had mine in my room since I started this little adventure. No complaints here. I dont run a skimmer. I can also keep tabs on it at all times since I livw most of my life in my room.It does wake me up in the middle of the night to be topped off though. Also it gets my girlfriend "in the mood" :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have a 70 gallon reef in my bedroom, but when we had our house built, I had a small room built behind the tank that houses all of the mechanics. I hear nothing but the water falling into the overflow. I was able to design our house so that the tank in my den and the one in the living room have the sumps in the basement, so I also hear nothing from them either. Maybe you can put your tank against a big closet so that the sump is inside of the closet. The server is busy now, so it won't let me post my response, so I'll babble on.......how about those Red Wings....... Anyone have a telescope out there? I just got a 12" Meade....... I think I saw a speck of dust on the moon......Most people just stop visiting a web page, they don't announce it like L.O.T.R. (must have something to do with genetalia size)

I could sleep through an earthquake, so I am prob. not a good judge of that. I have 3 tanks in my studio apartment and they are all very quiet

Are you sensetive to nosie? if so then don't do it. I hear the one in the living room in my bedroom if the door is open but it doesn't bother me, it's relaxing. the one you might want to think of is the timing on the lights. set them so there not on when you're asleep.

I'v had 75 in my room for about 6 months and love it. I'v got a custom built skimmer and sump with a mag drive 1200 and never really had a problem sleepimg or anything.

I absolutely love having a tank in my bedroom. I have a 72 bowfront reef at the foot of my bed. I have a red light designed for darkroom use in the hood and it is fascinating to watch at night. And I have to tell you the sound of moving water and the gentle light from the tank set a very romantic mood in the room. There are other thing to do than play with my tanks, but this sure combines a few of my favorite things.

Ive always had a tank in my bedroom. When I got my first saltwater tank the noise was a bit of a nuisance but you soon get used to it. Predator and I now live together and have our 75 in our room and it does not bother us at all. I guess it really depends on if you are a light sleeper.
