ok here it is: When hermit crabs are born, do they have that big curly thing behind them that curls up into the shell? when do they first start wearing shells? if it is when they are first born, dont they have a hard time finding shells that tiny? if they dont wear shells till they grow up a bit, what do they do untill then? run around

hermit crabs hatch from eggs as "zeoa" and go through several molts before aquiring shells, they live their first stage of life basicly as plankton.

Here's some more knowledge than
Plankton doesn't refer to an organism; it refers to a method of living in the water column. Any organism which cannot swim against the current is considered to be plankton; it is from the Greek work meaning a drifter or a wanderer. By contrast, fish and other organisms which can swim against the current are called nekton. A hermit crab is technically a meroplankton because it spends part of its life as plankton and the other part as benthic (those which do not swim but rather inhabit the sand beds and sea floors). Most fish are meroplankton as well.
