i will be setting up a 45 gal. tank in the next week or two. i'll probably start with 45 lbs of fiji live rock, 40 lbs of live sand, a seaclone 100 protein skimmer, and either a canister or power filter. i had looked into a canister filter, but i'm kinda intimidated by the setup and maintenance. i've seen many successful tanks on this site that used only a skimmer and power filter. i was looking particularly at the emperor 400. would this be sufficient for a fowlr tank or even a reef tank? thanks

I wouldnt get the seaclone skimmer. I have it and I hate it. It barely produces any waste and is a piece of garbage. Save your money and get a better protein skimmer such as a Octopus, Aqua-C or Euro-reef. Power filters and canister filters are not necessary with a good protein skimmer and enough live rock.

that set up would be great. most of ur liverock will do most of the bio filteration as long as u have plenty of water movement. i have a 75 with 80lbs of sand 100lr with the seaclone 100, emperor 400, 2 koralia #3's. all that water movement on ur 40 will be great. u might want to get a powerhead. just watch ur seaclone they are really hard to get set right and most people here dont like them but mine works great. u want to tighten ur air bleeder untill u see the main bubble disappear and asmany fine bubbles as u can get. also make sure u look into lighting before u commit to a reef tank as fowlr will require a totally diff lighting system.

Maxi-Jet Powerhead Model 1200 (295 gph) powers ur seaclone 100
Emperor 400 --- 400 gph
695gph flow
45gal x 10 flow= 450gph turnover

i really don't like the seaclone much, it does seem hard to adjust, but i have 1 from my previous setup. since i'm on a pretty tight budget i'll probably have to start with it and hopefully upgrade sometime in the future.
