Is it safe to use a standard 40w bulb in a 110w VHO unit?
I believe so but the 40w may not have the same life expectancy. but I have hears of poeple "overdriving" 40w bulbs this way.
But then what do I know?

Glad to hear that. Im not worried about life expectancy-just has to make it to the weekend, I'll replace both the 40w and the old 110 thats running with it.
Thanks for the info.

Agree....don't see why you couldn't.

It can be done using an IceCap ballast. I wouldn't try it with any other ballasts.
I've run 40w on icecaps with no problem, so I can say for sure that this works... at least on icecap.
Normally the lamp life would be very seriously reduced, but I think owing to the frequency that icecap drives the lamps at, it isn't as bad.

I've done it as well using GE6500K bulbs for a refugium. It nearly doubles the output and the bulbs lasts 3 years with very little drop in output over time. Again, on a IceCap660. I would not do it with any other ballast unless the manufacturer states it's not dangerous.
