Is it volume or length??

I am looking to upgrade my tank. I have someone that is getting rid of a 150 gallon tank that is close to 48"x30"x30". It is a nice "cube" looking tank. When you rate your 5 gal per inch of fish, is it the volume of the tank or is it length that is better. In other words, would one provide a 72"18"x24" lenght 150 gallon or the above. Both are 150 gallons. Does it even matter?? This will be for a reef with 3 soon to be good size tangs in a few years.

tangs like to swim alot. so they like a longer tank. Personally i like fat tanks, this way you have a deeper reef. but tangs need the lenght. what kind of tangs do you have?
