This is off the subject but I've been looking at adding the 404 for FX5 to my new 90 gal tank. How have these filters been? Everyone else tells me they are nitrate factories.

JMO, I would say add a sump/fuge system! My tank has never looked so good after the addition of the sump/fuge system. :happyfish

Yes you can use your taps. You could put a 20 gal tank to act as a sump/refugium either under the tank or beside it. You could try something like this... One of the important things to remember is that you need an air gap on your hose that goes from the tank to the sump. If not then you could siphon the water out of your display tank and overfill the refugium. The air gap slows down the water so that it only goes into the refugium as fast at the main pump can pump it out.

Mega,
If you want to keep corals, invertabrates, or sensitive fish, you will definitely need a skimmer. And a good one! Post a pic of your tank or tell us a little more about it. It sounds like you may have a RR tank, in which case a sump/refugium is a much better solution that the Fluvals.
And don't worry about the "air gap", it doesn't work that way. A small hole in the top of the return pipe just below water-level will do the trick.
I encourage you to read this:

It will help a lot with the setup.
