I got an anemone three days ago and it looked nice all the time. Yesterday I did a water change and over night it deflated and looked like death. After few hours it started to inflate but it’s still very small. Anyone has idea what could happen?

How can you tell if they are actually dead, or about to die? Mine looks pretty bad now, and i think its been getting worse. Its all deflated, and has stringly trails of mucus... I'm told they look like a ball of snot when they actually die, but by then they release toxins and so to does everything else in your tank die. First, any one care to comment? Is this true? I want to remove mine before this point obviously, but i'm not sure when to actually call it so to speak... :notsure:

I've read on here that they look like they are melting when they die. I've also read conflicting info on whether they really do poison your tank when they die. Hopefully Thomas will see this and help you, or if you post it in the anemone forum he'll see it for sure.

Releasing toxins is a contrivertial issue, however it will cause an anmomia spike, so that has to be gaurded against. Toxins also depend on the type of anemone.
Snot, melting ice cream are good discriptions when viewing a dieing anemone, the final is the smell, because its bad, real bad.
If you see parts of the mesenterial filaments or gametogenic tissue, then it's usually serious, sometimes you can see parts of the acontia coming out under the pedal disc but that can be normal.

Where are the stringy trails coming from? If it's coming from the center, it could just be taking a dump. One of my anenomes had long brown strings coming from its center and I thought it was dying, turns out it was only going to the bathroom.
