Is the Carib Sea 'live sand' worth buying?

I cant believe that prepackaged 'live sand' would be anything but a fraud. Am I right or wrong?

Yes, it is good stuff I used it in both my 55 gal and my 100 gal reef tanks. my cycles lasted less than 4 days and were almost non existent

Thanks, I thought it was a joke. I remember the old Fritzyme that went bad when it got hot. I will try some of the sand, thanks again. Final comment, this site is really great and it is because of the great people who are willing to share their time and knowledge. Thanks again!

It's a joke in the sense that it doesn't replace true "live" sand.
Fresh live sand will be full of micro life (snails, worms, pods, etc.).
I must admit, I'm skeptical of bagged shelf sand. Ammonia fixing bacteria needs oxygen. I can't imagine there is much in a bag of wet sand.

There was a thread on here a long time ago about a guy who was cycling a large amount of rock and added a bunch of that sand and his levels changed drastically overnight so it must do something, bacteria but no pods, little starfish, or other critters.

This site is great, as I have benefitted from it greatly over the last month. I try to "Pay Back" by answering questions that I have knowledge of...all be it very few answers so far.

not trying to hi-jack this thread but i have a question. i know that true live sand is more beneficial for your tank as far as living organisms and live bacteria but i heard that true live sand will "in time" break down and can cause your tank to crash. supposedly the bagged argonite doesn't break down. is this true? just curious.

Did you add all the sand at the same time or did you add it slowly over a period of time?

i added 4 bags over the course of 30 mins.
if you are just setting up your tank, expect to have a dust cloud like crazy though. no matter what people suggested, my water was cloudy for 3 days or more. clean out your filter media as well of the dust.

actually, a good LFS will keep it in the window or near light. my bags had green algae growing in it producing oxygen for aerobic bacteria.

thats what i used and works real good... cycle was almost non existent...
your tank will get so cloudy though.. from the dust in the sand that you wont be able to see in it... but your filter should clean it out in like 2-3 days.. just clean out the filter media often when you do this... and itll be kool.
and for your question... how high do you want your sand bed..

all Ca based sand will slowly dissolve into the water column. it will need to be replaced. i don't see how this could crash a tank, however. that sounds silly, but i could be wrong.

At least 2 inches. Thinking of mixing arag alive sand with other aragonite. Like to keep my $$ down if possible. I would like to be able to afford something alive in the tank besides sand.
