I read somewhere it is bad for your tank. Something about the rays that get blocked by the light are the "good" and the rays that pass are in the algea growing spectum.. Do not know the validty of this but have heard it somewhere.

I think it would be ok for the coral. the sun has many things that th lights do not have. is your tank set up near a window? i heard somewhere that you should not have a tank near the window because of algea, over heating, and for many other reasons.

have heardthe same thing about filtered sunlight through glass paynes...too much direct sunlight might be bad for the coral, ut my cause bad algae bloom depending on how long the tank is exposed to the sunlight; why not simply close the shades at that time...

The depth of the water is important in attenuating the intense sunlight. In fact, the shallowest natural reef I have seen was 6-7 feet deep. (I can't describe the beauty of that reef, it's like an out-of-body experience). For all intents and purposes, natural sunlight can be used if you provide a sort of screen to make up for the shallow water level. IMHO

I think the sun is the best you can get. If you get algae blooms, its because your phosphates and/or nitrates are too high for that intensity of light. But keep in mind that some of the corals may be deeper water ones, which would get too much if sunlight was directly on them for too long. Just use common sense when positioning these corals in the event you use sunlight.
Just my opinion,
