This seeems to be topic of VERY biast opinions. I have askesd the question myself, without receiving many responses. MY husband and I were at LFS this past weekend and ask the purpose and function of a skimmer. He said the mixing of the water with the air forces smaller particles together, thus providing "advanced" filtration. He then pointed out his 200gal tank with tangs (3), foxface, angel, trigger, and butterfly, and said he has never had a skimmer on that tank, just very good filtration (bio-balls, act.carbon filter) and a powerhead.
Here is what we are going to try: my overflow (corner-piece) will flow down through a sponge layer, through the bio-balls, then be filtered through my Fluval and ***** on the out-put of the FLuval we are going to attach a Rainfresh(?) water filter w/act.carbon also. For $35 I'll give that a try. I am VERY particular of my water conditions, so I will be doing water changes twice a month anyway. If it doesn't keep as clean as I like I'll dish out the $250 CAN for a skimmer. Each to there own, it will be interesting to see what others think. Some just pay the money, but don't can't even explain what it does. Lots of people have reef tanks and will find this an absolute necessity...........food for thought at least!:> )
