Just to pose a question. Where does that $30 bag of sand really come from and what makes one think that it is truly safe? Just because you "paid" for it?
About the whole "pocket change" thing, u need to think about the long run. You have a couple coral and fish, they cost a lot more than 30 bucks and if you were to lose them due to poor sand u would not be happy.
not bashing, just constructive criticism. I tried the hobby at your age and failed because i slacked on maintenence ie.. water changes etc all because of lack of money. Just don't want you to make the mistakes i did.
Test it out, see what happens. If you dont have a problem with the tank more power to you, if you get a tank crash...well you took the risk. If you got it from the beach and it was dry its not live sand anyway so you are still going to need to seed it with LR or LS.
Bryan
if he or she is trying to prove something with those pictures than why ask the question??????????????? Don't ask the question if you will not like the answers.
They not bashing just worried about the inhabitants of the tank.
I wouldnt I know I thought about it but then thought better because over here we get red tide once a year, it does become airborne and will get into everything.
Good luck with it if it works good for you if not then I would go an buy the bagged sand. Since you have the one tank which looks good why dont you just get the cheep sand from Home Depot and then seed it from your established tank?
I just wouldnt because I am a freek when it comes to my fish.
Let us know what happens.

More than likely this is illegal to do. I would pay the money for the supplies and livestock and avoid the potential fine.
Taking sand from the beach is a felony. I Had a friend who tried this for his tank and a cop stopped him and told him he needed to put it back or he was going to arrest him. I know children do it all the time but I wouldnt just because I dont want that charge. Its just something that if you want to take the chance go ahead but most people on here wouldnt.
$30 is pocket change in this hobby (sadly, lol), I spend at least double easily in a week for maintenance. You don't know for sure that the island wasn't sprayed for mosquito larvae, you don't really know anything about possible contamination. As stated above, this is not live sand so it will take longer anyhow.

Why don't you frag a couple of your dad's corals? I'm sure your lfs will trade some sand for some frags.

THIS IS ILLEGAL IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA only accredited people with a purpose of research and stated on a permit application can harvest in the florida waters. also even if it was legal seahorses and pipefish that are wild cought do not live long because they usually do not take prepared foods.
Please DO NOT collect anything else from the waters ~~~again it is illegal!!
Mike
I agree with Mike. Dont do it just for the sake of saving money. If you dont have the money to buy them or something to trade for them then dont do it. They will die a slow and horrible death
.
Besides you dont want to be charged with a felony for saving money.
Sorry but I wouldnt even start unless I had the buckage for it.

This is taking me alot of restraint to respond here. Where the heck do you get off saying THIS IS ILLEGAL IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA???? I see this stupid crap all the time. Check out the laws please before you state your "OPINIONS".
Mods will delete this, but I have to post it. http://myfwc.com/marine/recreational/recharvestmls.htm
Says nothing about sand.
I live in S florida near palm beach and many people here take sand and rock... and of course WATER from the beaches. I believe the cops wont give you a hard time if you are taking DRY goods or water, but the moment you take wet sand or LR it is considered damaging the reef, and natural habitat.
I dont think a couple of buckets of sand is going to hurt anyone. There are many private beaches where there is less pollution and litter, and that would most likely be fine to take dry sand, rinse it well and put it in the tank.
That wildlife/gaming bulletin says nothing about sand.
Imagine the BUCKET fulls of sand and rock and shells that kids take off the beach every year during the tourist season. The cops could care less.
JMO.
In reality... most people do take things from the beach.

owned!
If I catch someone taking rock or hard corals, I'll pound them. But the sand, livestock, with few exceptions, is available. Blows me away that people think it is "illegal with federal laws" to collect tropicals here. Get a license. Know the rules.
Everything in moderation. And I would like to think that the folks here understand moderation. Ya'll would not be here (SWF.com) if you were hap-hazard in the hobby.
I had someone I know get told by a police officer taking sand is illegal and told him to put it back on the beach or he would be arrested. BTW it was dry.
And so you know all the beach sand is dredged sand and came from a reef. Doesnt matter what pollutants/nonpollutants are in the sand it is there because there is no such thing as a "private" beach. They are all owned by the federal govt. And water is not I have people I know do water changes with ocean water and they are fine.
Just warning you so no one gets arrested.
Sorry if anyone is pissed by this but I dont want a felony on me for damn sand I could buy in a LFS.
