Take some of those flat ones and some epoxy and make some nice ledges.

A lot of that is base rock. Take some out. Don't rely on "rules of thumb" they are rarely worth mentioning (no offense to the person that mentioned it). What are you planing to have in your tank? Will it be a reef?
