Oh yes, I'm new... but learning sooo much every day from this message board.
This quote and this string of posts baffles me. I would think that the SWF tank owner would know what they are stocking their tank with. How do new things mysteriously inhabit tanks without the knowledge of the owner? Could that Brittle star have hitch-hiked into the tank on LR? What other suprises do LR hold?
Thanks for the input

You are exactly right. There are many little critters, both good and bad, that hitch-hike on live rock all the time. That is why some people do fresh water dips with their rock (when it comes in) so that they can drive out any crabs or shrimp that might be hiding in the many holes the rock has. Hope this helps

I feed my green B-Star rw shrimp, he loves it and is doing great. He's pretty active, and tramps all around the LR, though. I'm suprised to hear this one's sticking to one spot.
I am concerned, though, about him eating fishies. anyone have some good ideas of a way to catch him? I caught a few gobies down @ Corpus Christi last weekend, and have a 6-line. I don't want to lose them! I also have a fuge to put him in, BTW.

Answer to Question #1
Even a FW dip (unless you leave it in long enough to render your rock dead) will not kill organisms deep inside the rock. Organisms come in LR. That is the whole point in paying for premium LR.
Answer to Q #2
Yes, it did come with the rock. 90% of the stuff that comes on the LR is beneficial. The other 10% is aiptsia
or some other pest. The benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
Answer to Q #3
LR can carry anything that can hide in it. I've heard of fish coming out of deep crevaces. Bristle worms, peanut worms, spaghetti worms, feathers, pods, stars, shrimp, crabs, snails, sponges, sea spiders, almost anything.
I spend hours watching my rock come to life after "lights out" as do any others here. It's part of the hobby.

try baiting him after dark with a chunk of shrimp, then scoop him into a specimen container.
