is this a good protein skimmer???

Does look like a Coralife. They're OKAY. They're easy to use and don't usually need to be modified like some of the other do. They're fine if you don't plan on keeping a million tangs or angel fish and stay on top of how much you feed the tank. I know a couple people that have them are do just fine.

You should be fine. Don't over feed and do regular water changes. I know someone that keeps one on a 75G reef with a mated pair of hippo tangs and some other fish and he's had no issues. He actually likes it.

I do water changes every week (about 15-20%), but I'm a little anal about water clarity and my protein skimmer is too small for my tank at the moment. Most people do every other week. Either way you'll be fine, you'll just really have to find what works for you. If you notice your parameters getting out of whack, do a water change. I rarely do top offs, just do a water change since by the end of the week when the top off is needed, we're ready to do a water change anyway. Top offs never worked for me and always through off my salinity readings.

If it's cycling they can. There's an argument as to whether or not people should do water changes while cycling. I did on my BioCube and it worked out fine. I really think it's a personal preference. If you're going to keep tangs, which produce large bioloads, I'd do a water change at minimum of every 2 weeks.

I've used one for 2 use and it works pretty well. Cup fills up with dark green sludge about once a week, never needs adjusting, so it's pretty user friendly when used in a sump as opposed to hang-on.

What size tank do you run this on and what's your stock list like?
I'm really interested in this skimmer and want to hear some other peoples opinions on it and what they're running. My friend has one and swears by it, but his tank is half the size of mine.

If you do not ever top off your salinity will be on the rise.

I don't need to top off since I do a larger water change and do it weekly. I check my salinity every single day, it doesn't budge. I don't have the tank it a warm area like most people do so the air stays cool outside the tank which lowers evaporation rates.
I have to do top offs in my 14G nano since it's a closed system and gets hot, but not in my 40G or my 155G.
During a very hot week in the summer, I occasionally have to do a top off, but most of the time, no top off needed. I'm lucky to have an extremely stable tank.

I use it in the sump of my 55gal. Not heavily stocked, 2 clowns, a mandarin, and various inverts and lots of soft corals.
