I have a uv on my 210, IMO having a UV is better than no UV!
I have a friend of mine that has a 350 reef, a couple of his fish got ich when adding some LR from the LFS and he didnt do anything, it just went away on its own.
He has a UV and that was the main reason I got mine.
They seem to work but really up to you and seems to be debated alot!

If I had a large tank, with a large investment in fish, I would consider it.
But they are definitely not necessary, and have some drawbacks. In addition, it is important that the UV is set up properly. Many people may have the flow rate too fast, and may not change the bulb often enough...so in theory, it may not be doing much.
I personally would spend the money on something else to assist in water quality. There are definitely ways of preventing disease outbreaks such as ick. Ick, IMO, is symptomatic of stress in the system.

After an outbreak of ich last year I purchased a UV from someone on this board. I'm glad I did. Since then all my tanks now have UVs and I've never had a problem since.
When one is putting thousands of dollars into a single tank, it only makes sense to me to spend $139.00 for a TurboTwist for added insurance.
Of course, if you have the water moving through it too fast you aren't going to get optimal results from a UV. That is why I like the TurboTwist. You get the water through the UV at a slower rate as it twists through the UV and you don't get dead spots in the UV.
One also has to remember that a UV light needs to be replaced in the UV every six months otherwise you the effectiveness is also compromised.

UV will not cure or prevent Ich. A simple QT tank is the easiest way to ensure against Ich.

IMO, a UV will not protect against stress or illness caused by overstocking, poor husbandry, water quality issues, etc. It is a nice security blanket, but not a cure all. I agree that proper QT would be the first line of defense against ick issues, followed by slow patient stocking and tank care. It does not guarantee that there will be no problems down the road....but neither does a UV.
So it is a matter of what you expect to get from it I guess. But be wary also of people trying to sell you all manner of things you "need." On the list of equipment to invest in (for an average tank), it is not near the top of my list, personally.
