Is this a sponge, or something more nefarious?

Well, the Broncos lost today.
I thought the best way to cheer myself up would be to post my first question:
What is this thing? I found it while trying to find a dragon goby that I later discovered had passed away two days after taking a leap of faith and landing on the hardwood floor (he was alive when we found him on the floor, barely).
My nitrates/nitrites both read zero, my pH is 8.1, and my ammonia is at 0.25 ppm. My specific gravity is 1.021, and the temp is 82.5. It's been a week since my last water change (20%).
Anyway, I think it might be a sponge, but I'm not sure. It's about the size of a golf ball that's half-buried in the live rock. See the pic below.
Thanks for all your help, everyone!

Thanks so much for the quick reply!
I posted a thread with some more details about my tank at https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/368308/introducing-myself#post_3165390.
So no worries with the sponge, right? I'm not sure why my ammonia is up a little; could it be because I fed them about an hour before I did the water test?

Oh, Cranberry: nefarious = evil, wicked, or dangerous. I don't want anything in there that's going to kill my fish.

Ya, I asked my husband. I didn't know too many people spoke like he did :) That is going to be my Readers Digest word for tomorrow.
