Bleaching results when the symbiotic photosynthetic zooxanthellae (seperate single-celled algae) are released or die from inside the anemone due to stress such as not enough proper lighting. The anemone depends on the zooxanthellae that live inside their tissues. The photosynthetic activity of the zooxanthellae produces a by-product of nutiants that the anemone needs to survive and remain healthy. When the zooxantheallae are expelled, the anemone loses its normal color, leading to a bleached or completely white appearance.
