I have a 60 octagon tank with some live rock and some mushrooms, couple of fish. Lfs said i didnt have enough light so they sold me a light for 150.00 dollars.
Here are the specs.
Brand name is CURRENT.
20in 2 lamp 40 watt 24hr lighting system.
40watt sunpaq dual actic
420nm + 460nm
40watt dual daylight 6,700 k + 10,000 k and two lunar lights.
I asked the sales men about watts per gallon and they said this was perfect for any reef situation. 80watts sounds low and they said the quality bulbs ment i had plenty of light also. So far everything looks good and healthy. Been useing the lights for a week or so.

That light will be fine for the live rock, and okay for the mushrooms, but that is about it. No other corals will do well under 1.4 watts per gallon of lighting.

How deep is the tank? How many inches? I think hes right about not having enough light but 80watts total would be too weak for any serious LPS, SPS, Clams and anemones especially if you have a deep tank. I'm going with the idea that the tank is around 30inches deep? being a hex? I'd go with one big DE HQI halide pendant like a 400watt depending on how wide the tank top is.
80/60= 1.33333 Watts per gallon
400/60=6.66666 Watts per gallon
Its not the quality of the bulbs but the light spectrum that matters. I have a kick-arse high beam spotlight that would look beautiful shining down into the tank. The only problem is that my corals and clam would die.

Thanks, my tank width is so narrow, i dont know if they make a light that would fit. This 20 in fits perfect. Man this bites. Oh well i guess the Lfs guys were wrong again. If anyone knows where i can get the right light for a 60 tall octagon please let me know.
And how much do they cost.
Thank you Billy:)
