I made this for cheap actually.. I want to raise capepods.. I went to Lowe's to buy a sheet of acrilic and he actually cut down some scraps for me for $5.00 that is 7" X 7" by 3"wide.. I got that size to fit in my sump.. it hangs on the inside of my sump and is fed water threw a small 404 powerhead that I put an adjustable T connector in to control the flow rate. I cut small holes into the front and side of the box to drain back into my sump to go to the display tank.. I added 1 1/2" of live sand, then about 2" of rock rubble that was in the bottom of the liverock tank at the LFS along with some grape caulerpa..
I have never made a refugium before, will this be sufficient to raise capepods??
Pictures attached..

Wow, a 29 gal is no tank for either the tang or the mandarin
I like the little fuge you made though.

I agree, even with fuge the tank won't sustain enough pods for a mandraine, and a tang needs a much larger tank.

thanks for all the negative responses.. HE IS LIKE 1 1/2" big.. when he gets too big Im sure I will find him a new home aka a bigger aquarium.. I asked a simple question and all you SOB's wanna comment on something else.. this forum is for S**T!!! JUST FOR ALL OF YOU, MY TANG IS FINE, he eats very well and is happy in his home.. I have raised larger fish in a 29 gallon tank. I have had freshwater angels that were 5" that had tons of babies that grew up quite fine in a 29 gallon tank.. Fish will only grow to the size of the tank, they are like iguanas they grow to their surroundings.. Thanks for all the negative responses.. All you SOB's wanna dog people cause you think everything you do or think you know is better than everyone else. I see i have joined the wrong forum.

From a more reasonable perspective, CC, have any got on any dives and observed tangs? Do you realize that they swim MILES a day? What a 5" FW angel have anything to do with a tang? They may not even leave the 5 feet of their home in the wild.
To answers your question, yes the refugium is okay to use for raising pods. However it is not nearly enough. I learned the hard way 29 is not enough, I have a much bigger refugium on my 29gal (~15gals) and he still out ate the pods in the tank and starved. A decent mandarin consumes about 500 pods a day. You would have to restock very often.

These forums are for hobbists to help each other. We thought maybe you didn't know your tank was to small for a tang, thus the comments about it. Sorry for trying to help you out

Have you considered a scooter blenny instead of a mandrin? You can usually get them to eat mysis shrimp if you work with them. That way less pods are needed.

just a little fyi...
there are studies out there that suggest the fish DO stunt their organ growth to fit their tank size. but, they cannot stunt their bone growth, which makes their bones brittle, and possibly puncture the stunted grown organs. so yea, you're slowly killing your fish very painfully. good going!
i won't mention that you're going to starve to death a mandarin. good going there too!

Freshwater fish are often very different from saltwater, especially considering the hundreds of miles of ocean that some SW fish will swim. If this is the way you react to suggestions, then I don't think any forum will be suitable for you. I sure hope you decide that the two fish noted would be better off in a larger, more habitable tank and either upgrade or trade them into your LFS. Best of luck.

Nice refugium. It looks great, but it won't produce enough pods to keep a Mandarin alive.
Abusive and foul language will not be tolerated.
