I used tap water for my initial fill up. I would never do it again. RO water from now on. It is safe but IMO i would use RO.

Thats fine for freshwater fish. NOT saltwater. You will pay dearly in the future with SERIOUS problems from algeas etc. Plus you can never be sure what metals, chemicals etc. are in your public water. I am the water super. for my town I KNOW!

i did that exact thing, hose water and something to help the chlorine or something, later i leared about RO water and how bad tap/hose water is and now my tank is fully RO, the tap water worked for me in the begging, until i started getting TONS of algea and couldnt find a reason for it

some walmarts barely filter it at all and some don't upkeep those machines well enough :( though the one i tried might have been a fluke asides stories i've heard about such machines. Many LFS's are starting to sell RO/DI with minerals etc added back in i'd go for that first if available.

I was referring to the gallon jugs already packaged not the ones out of the machines. I have used the jugs since I started , and have no no problems at all. I dont have any experience with the re-fill station water so I dont know for sure about that>
