why dont I just buy abag and test it? Its $3 for crying out loud. Draining 55g of water to pour vinegar on my stand is plain dumb, no offense.

Good point, but all you got to do is scoop out like a teaspoon full and dump it in a cup of vinegar. You don't have to test your whole sandbed.

what if I take some out of the aquarium and let it dry, then do it? Will it still have the same effect?

Yeah, but you don't have to dry it. The little bit of saltwater that is on it will not knock out the power of a small cup of vinegar.

I havent done the vinager test but I would be very suprised if it were aragonite sand. just doesn't look like it. the bag says it only has a small amount of "silica". As stated I had the initial diatom blooms then one day they stopped and became a problem of the past. My fuge has had zero diatom issues and has the same sand. make your own conclusions. I dont know how good or bad this sand is but my intent is to find out. I do know it hasn't harmed any fish, corals or other inverts like snails and fighting conch which was my main concern. algae problems can be dealt with regardless of the source.

Why do you have to wash the LS that you by at a LFS vs cutting open the bag and dumping it into your tank?

I've actually got this in my 30L for my shelldwellers. I've had them for probably 3 years and that tank has always seemed to have an algae growth problem. It's not in direct sunlight and the lights are only on for about 8 hours, no live plants....

You don't Rinse the sand that comes Wet. All you have to do is dump the liquid part in the drain or something, and just put it all IN.
The sand that comes Dry in a bag, that you have to rinse with fresh ro/di and it's just to cut down on the cloudinesss/die-off..

Thank you for your explanations of rinsing off the LS.
Anyone have pics of a tank with Tahitian Moon sand?

I use the Tahitian moon sand in my 37 seahorse tank and it looks great. if you look in the seahorse forum you can see many pics with it.

just picked up three bags of the sand yesterday so I'll try and remember to get some vinegar tonight and play with it. Will take pics/let you know.

I have the exact same sand in my reef for over 3 years now. no problems, no algae, and yes it does pass the vinegar test. I have 400lbs of it in my tank. just make sure to rinse it very good.
