Three concerns:
1. Green chromis should be kept in odd-numbered groups, so consider three instead of two. That said, I have never had success with these beautiful little guys in even or odd numbered groupings

2. Rabbit fish are too large for a 55 gallon system. They get to be over 12". Always plan on the adult size when stocking.
3. Blue tangs: which one? Powder blue? Hippo? Either one needs at least 6 feed of swimming length, so your 55 gallon tank may be too short for this species. They also get large (see #2, above).

I know that many folks plan on adding a tang to a small tank, then catching it later and trading it in. There are problems with this plan: it isn't easy on the fish keeper or the fish to remove it from a display tank that is full of live rock and other fish (who also will be stressed). It sometimes requires a complete teardown to capture a fish. Hippo tangs are especially adept at wedging themselves into inaccessible crevasses when spooked.

Hi,

11 fish is WAY overstock for a 55g tank....besides what GeriDoc told you about the species you selected. an adult Hippo Tang or Power Blue need a 100g tank. The Blue reef chromis has the same awesome color as the Hippo tang, even the black stripe, and the blue color actually fluoresce and shimmer under the lights...and you can have more then 1, they get about 3 inches as adults.

The fairy wrasse (doesn't matter which one) is a jumper, I mean they intend to kill themselves. I had a mesh covering 100% sealed up, and mine managed to jump out at the tiny corner I lifted to feed it as I was standing there with the food....not only did it manage to jump, it leaped to the back of the tank against the wall where I couldn't recue it if I wanted to.

The idea of "grow out"...I did it and NEVER will again. The hippo tang can go completely flat under the rocks, you will catch it as you remove the last rock from the tank. That stresses the entire tank of fish, and the tang, and it stirs up sand that has been unstirred for years under those little crevices, releasing, possible toxins as you remove the rock.

What I kept in my 55g:
  • Dwarf angel (I tried a flame angel first...the tank was too young...a year later once established I got a Lemonpeel, was my favorite fish)
  • Lawnmower blenny
  • Royal Gramma 4 or 5 years later it died.....I replaced it with an orchid dottyback, I liked the dottyback better.
  • Teeny, tiny fingernail sized Hippo tang (I actually purchased a larger tank as it grew, 75g to a 90g and then moved all the fish.
    Fox face rabbitfish
    Purple firefish
Diamond sandsifter goby (later died of starvation when fauna was depleted)
Hermit crabs, snails, serpent star and two cleaner shrimps

I didn't know about the Blue Reef Chromis until I had the 90g tank. Get this book, it gives the adult size of the fish, and needed tank size to keep it.

I've had a fairy wrasse in my tank for about 2 years with no lid and he/she has not jumped yet. Same time for the 2 chromis and they are just fine.
What's in my tank are 2 green chromis 2 pajama cardinals some kind of fairy wrasse royal gramma and an engineer goby. They are doing fine.
