I disagree petjunkie...
The prisoners taken in Afghanistan are being released because they are no longer considered a threat. We don't need a court to convict these people, they were captured IN BATTLE. They are prisoners of war. Why the heck do we need to apologize to them? They should be apologizing to us... They are lucky they weren't killed in battle.....
Torture comes into play with Al Queda. They are terrorists; while uniformed afghanis' have Geneva Convention Rights terrorists DO NOT.
I don't believe the nonsense about torture victims don't talk. Our own miltary trains special forces in anti-interrogation techniques and puts safeguards in place so that missions, plans, etc. are not compromised once someone is captured.
Torture does work... look at the propaganda films American soldiers were forced to make during Vietnam (Vietnam, btw, had signed the Geneva Convention but apparently forgot about the way prisoners were supposed to be treated....).
Conviction numbers pre-post 9/11 is a silly statistical analysis. We are at war; we don't have "convictions" in courts because terrorists are not subject to our judicial system. They are not being captured and shipped to jails to await a Grand Jury.
finally, you can't say the current methods aren't working. We haven't been attacked on USA soil in 5 years now... I'd say the current methods are 100% successful.
If the CIA needs to slap a guy around or break a few bones to prevent a WMD attack all I'm going to say is "need some help?".
