Ok, the guy at our new favorite lfs in Canada said "if you add another Clarkie Clown to the tank, as long as its smaller then the one in there, it will change to the oppsite ---." Is this true??? I really hope so, after the new tank cycles, Tyson(clarkie) will be the only fish in our reef tank and I would love to add a second clarkie if, what he said is true. Thanks in advance for any and all info. Later Lisa :D

That is somewhat true.It is not so much the size,as which one is most domminate that turns into female. This is usually the larger of the two(BIGGER IS MEANER).. There will most likly be some nasty fighting till they figure out the pecking order...

Hey Lisa,
I had a big maroon clown and wanted another for her. I asumed that it is a she. So I bought a little maroon gold stripe. I asumed it was a male. He is tiny. Well it has been wonderful. She digs him, he looks at her "Wow, what a women." LOL The Damsil was picking on him at first, here she came and nailed the damsil. The damsil won't even look at the clowns now. LOL

I had the strangest thing happen to me with my clowns. I bought 3 clowns, the big female and 2 smaller males....well naturally the males where always fighting; I'd remove one [the dom male] to QT to see if the odd-man clown would gain a bit of aggression and reprieve from being harrassed by the dom male. By the time I returned the QT-ed clown to the main tank, my plan worked, and now the other clown was dominant and would harrass the other male...removed him and started the cycle again...this went on about 3 times. Finally the 2 males settled down and accepted each other [they'd all sleep together up at the top of tank wedged between tank and PH], but by that time, my hippo tang [which I got as a baby] was a juvi and the female clown took a liking to him!!! Well she'd follow him around like a puppy dog and chase off the 2 male clowns! This went on until the hippo became an adult and then he got mean and really got aggressive with all the clowns; he ended up killing my dominate male clown before I figured out what was going on and he also abused my female....Well he went to timeout QT for 2 mos. When returned they all did alright with each other and the female and the leftover male finally paired up. The female is about 3x the size of male.

Hey Beth, did they ever have any babies? I think this is sooo coool! Another question: if they do produce babies, do you: remove them from the tank? leave them in the tank with the parents? Will the parents eat them? What is the typical behavior of these fish with offspring? Thanks for all the info. God, I Love this BB. So many great people with lots of great info.....Thanks again, Later Lisa :D
P.S Hey Shel, that is sooo cool! Totally!

I've now got three pairs of clowns (1 pr. percs, 1 pr. Maroons and 1 mixed Perc/Oscellaris). In my 100 gal. I started out with a pr. of Oscellaris. They were fine for ~ 1 year and bonded to become 1 big Famale and small Male). After ~ 1 year, I threw an Oscelaris into the mix, figuring the two top dogs would sort themselves out and I've have 1 Female with 2 Males). This seemd to work out OK initially, but caused problems after ~ 4 mos. I suspect I actually wound up with 2 Females and 1 Male. The Females camped out on opposite sides of the tank and the Male would sneak around with both Females. It was amusing for a while... sort of like Jerry Springer in our tank. After a while, the Females escallated their fighting, like the uncut Jerry Springer video, until the Perc. Female was fairly tattered. Just as I was about to remove one of the Females, the small Male turned up missing. Now, the Perc. and Oscelaris are happily sharing a huge Seabae anemone as a bonded pair.

BTW,
Here are the clowns I mentioned above...
The Clowns look small, because the Anemone is huge.
