Is this water ok?

why would you use distilled water? its stripped of all the minerals found in all water - in the long run, won't it be detrimental b/c it will pull those minerals from the sand/cc or LR in your tank?

Your salt mix has the nutrients you need. Tap water contains "minerals" and pollutants in indeterminate amounts contributing to unstable water conditions, possible buildup of toxins, and various unknown water chemistry factors. Regular water changes using the purest water mixed with a quality salt mix reduce the "unknowns" in your tank and provide everything your critters need to thrive.

Do a search on a post I listed not long ago entitled Distilled water? There is some great advice from Kip.
Good luck and HTH!!

The major problem with Tap water is that it has trace elements in concentrations high enough to be poisonous to many salt water animals. Other problems include a high nutrient level that can lead to algae problems.

IMO ... not that it matter much being a newbie here, BUT ... I think using tap water depends on where you live. We have 2 LFS in two different cities, one of which gets its water from the town i live in, from our fairly new water treatment plant ... The other other is on a different water system. The one that gets it water from where i live, uses tap water. Even in his own SW tank at home. We have exelcent water for coral ect here, (from what he says) and i've had NO problems iwth water. The other has to use one of those units for there water. So maybe do some research on your water before makeing a decission. :) Just MO

That's a good opinion and I do agree with it.

It completely depends on what's in your local tap water. Generally Phosphate is added to protect you plumbing so PO4 will be very high. In some locations Copper is added to the reservoir to kill off excess algae. Copper is a Major concern with reef aquariums. It is toxic to nearly every salt water animal at levels barely above Natural salt water levels.
Silicates, Nitrate, Chlorine, zinc & ammonia are other concerns.
