is this wise or stupid?

i am wanting to take the filter sponge off of my return pump as i want to cut down my maintenance routine, so if i filter my overflows instead as they are easier to get to (and has been recomended to me from this site) and i know sponges seem to be a nitrate trap, is this a good idea or a bad one thanks...tobin

BBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!! less filtration matter means MORE waste acumulates in your tank cause MUCH MUCH more maintance or ever worse a total tank crash...
so I would take the 15 minutes a month to change the filters

I have 3 filtration sytems on my 90 gallon/ The canister is the healthy bacteria colony grower, and the 2 aqua clear filters I the for water clarity and for puting in carbon and other additinal additives asneeded. :happyfish

Thanks...no prob. Bronco also mentioned that it could be done, but the extra waste would eventually muck up the filters. So what is your system set up?
My system is set up for seahorses...but can be easily changed over to reef.
How many tank occupants do you currently have?
Right now i only have 2 fish in my horse tank. My Kudahorse and a fire goby. So the last thing I worry about is water quality degrading do to tank load.

I am just a little curious, are you using the sponge filter on your return pump as your primary or only filtration? If not I would have removed it before I even put it on. With overflows and a fuge I would assume you have some type of filtration in your sump. That one sponge filter on your return pump is probably causing more problems than it is helping....especially if you are not cleaning it on a very regular basis. Keep in mind this is just my opinion, from my own experiences..I never run sponges for filtrtaion at all..good luck!!

The red items I don't use. I don't have much experience with sump tanks, although I'd like to try one some day, after I talk my hubby into the 300 gallon tank
. I use a much simpler filtration system.
The tank load/occupants sounds great
I wish I could talk my husband to let me upgrade to a 150 gallon!!!
My first reaction to removing filter matter would ensue disater in my tank. The water quality in my tank depends on them because I don't use skimmers and other fancy equipment. I have tried skimmers but found them usless, but I would not recomend these actions to a newbie.
And the other thought that occured to me is: the larger the tank you have, the easier it is to maintain water quality levels.
Being that I have dubbed myself the black sheep of the SWF Forum...I'll try just about anything to find out if it works or not....given I always consider the safety of my tank occupants. So I'd try it....just keep a close eye on your tank. If the water quality takes a nose dive within the first 2-4 days....you will have your answer.

I wouldnt use a spomnge on your return pump because it will keep pods from returning to your DT just use the sponge on the overflow for mechanical if you want. I dont actually use any spoges in my system but for yours it may be nice to have the adde3d mechanical filtration.

as much as i hate the seaclone skimmer i can say a couple of good things about them 1 they fit in small compact places 2 they do pull gunk out just not alot and my goal was/is to eliminate all mechanical filtration besides the skimmer am i wrong in wanting to go all natural lr and flow and some plants? :notsure: if i am wrong i'll go get a biowheel or something in the sump/fuge thanks...tobin

ok got new water mixin took the pump out redid it, cleaned all the sponges on pump and skimmer, added a bio-wheel in the sump, not using the wheel just a filter pad, going to add some kent nitrate sponge, now i have never used the nitrate sponge before so can i just put this in the bio-wheel reservoir or what? soon that will be full of lr rubble but for now it seems like a good place for the nitrate sponge, am i on the right track? my nitrates have always been high so trying to fix that thanks...tobin
