Issue with reflector size

I just got my 250W metal halide in today. The reflector plate is slightly wider than my tank (front to back). I had been advised to place my other two PC's beside the MH. Now...becuase the reflector, which is attatched to the bulb outlet (thing), is so large, is it safe to place the PC's underneath the MH reflector. They would each be a matter of inches away from the MH bulb. Is this safe or do I need to find a different way to configure this?

$400 for a chiller! That is senseless! Why does our society find a way to find cheap ways to heat things and expensive ways to cool things! Yes I know the physics thanks for those of you who would actually answer. That is absurd. HOW can the water be 85 degrees when all I'm using is a shielded flourescent strip light, regardless if it is two inches from the surface?! MAKES NO SENSE. Could it be the powerheads??? I have three MJ1200's operating in some form within the tank, which is not too great, but how else can I get good enough circulation??? There is no way I'm going to pay anywhere near that price for a freakin chiller. I'm putting in fans and will place my new MH and PC lighting at least a foot above the surface...if that doesn't fix it than what willlllllll......chillers....ha...how utterly ridiculous...

The heat from the MHs will be hard on the phosphors in the PCs but running the PCs under the MH reflector will shield some heat... but it will also deflect some light from the PCs. Can you turn the MHs 90deg and make it work better??

The reflector is pretty much an entire semicircle. I'd rather not cut it unless completely necessary. But you don't think that it would be unsafe on either bulbs to put the PC's under the MH reflector?

Hey, the only thing I can say is be careful what you put close to your lights.
I've got 2 250w de 20k's on my tank. I mounted one the first day I had them directly in the middle of my tank, then moved it and mounted the other one spaced out accordingly. They are mounted evenly and lengthwise over the tank. However, just the single lighting cycle on my tank (when only 1 bulb was over the middle) nearly melted off my cross support. I would say be careful what you put it near. In terms of cooling what do you have in the way of fans? Just use PC case fans with a power adapter. Cheap and efficient. I don't know how big your tank is, but use a couple for intake and a couple for exhaust if you have to. I wasn't about to drop $400 on a chiller either... that's freaking nuts! Not trying to sound like a newb, just kind of learn from mistakes I suppose.. :joy:
