Don't you have a place that will take it from you??? I paid $60.00 for 3 stalks of Xenia.
One mans garbage is another mans treasure. Holds very true here.
Maybe thats how SWF.com got started

i have the pink stuff that pulses and i really like it. somebody beat me to my lfs with theirs. i called and they said they had plenty so now all the stuff i have fragged is sitting in my tank and it looks messy so its got to go. maybe i can talk my husband into doing the dirty deed.

yes it is an animal, but does that mean it is inhumane? That would go against the basic moral rights that animals have. Killing them simply because you don't want them. However to compare xenia to a dog would be pure insanity imo. Pitch it. It doesn't feel pain. The definition of a weed is a plant that is in a place you don't want it to be. Do you pull weeds? Xenia is technically not a weed, but it is alive and it does not feel pain...just like a plant. Remove it and pitch it...that is if you can't make money off of it. Sell some to Gup and pitch the overflow when sales can't be made. Don't feel bad about it. You kill billions of bacteria each day...what makes this so different?

If you have any left send me a pm. My local fish shop is supposed to give me a bunch but it's taking him forever. I have a 3o w/ just a few corals and a 55 i'm getting ready to start putting some corals in now. I hate to see anything get thrown away. Thanks

Hi, I said I wasn't going to lecture but...

I know Xenia doesn't scream when you kill it, frag it or whatever. I just want you to know IT DOES FEEL PAIN.
If it didn't it wouldn't shrink when you cut it, shy away from too bright of light or wilt when you mess with it. It is an animal, a simple animal just above the grass of the field, but a living thing.
I disagree that is just mindless living tissue. It may not THINK like you do but it does think in its own simple way. That is why it will move to where it wants to go.
I had one move across the tank about a 7 inches. It took it a long, long time but it moved. My Xenia does not grow out of control because I have a warm tank. They grow like crazy in a cool tank of 78 to 79 degrees. I keep my tank at 82
When they are too much to keep, I know you have no choice but to dispose of it. I am not saying to find a home and never kill it. I swat flies when they pester me. I know however the fly felt it. I know the Xenia does too.

Actually because they lack a nervous system...they do not feel pain.

Alright I can admit I am not expert, I don't know if they have a nervous system... They react to things that would obviously cause pain, like cutting in half...
If they react doesn't that mean they can feel it?
Are you going by experience, or did you read it somewhere?
I am not arguing...I really think this is fascinating, I would like to know.

I've always read that corals lack nervous systems. Now, fish lack the cerebral activity mammals have, so when fish are in pain, it isn't as bad as it is for mammals...
Every living thing on earth has the ability to react to change...that's a requirement.
So the way I look at it, if you are willing to kill a plant, killing a coral is no different.
There's no right or wrong, it's all opinion. However, I'm pretty sure it's a fact that corals can't feel pain.

Okay, do you remember where you always read it? What book or online site would have the information?
I am not digging for opinions, every living thing has an opinion. That’s a given.
For myself in order to form an intelligent opinion, I would like to know the facts as presented.

I do not, but I will look for it for you. I know it was in a book, but there should be something online.

Anyway, if they did feel pain, would it matter? I mean, what would it matter in the end? It would ruin there lives...but the species would go on.
So they die and it's your fault
and you put them through terrible torture...who cares?
JMO, but most people treat there tanks like gardens, I think that that is the way they should be treated.

Thank you for the information on how to make a colt coral frag. The author certainly does insist informatively that they do not have nervous systems, which I find interesting.
That article even mentioned my own observation of the creature shrinking away from pain.
You see the highlighted area?
That attitude is evil. You are too young to be so jaded.
In the event you felt you had to defend yourself and said that... I wasn't trying to put you on the defense. I am sorry if I gave you that impression. I really have never heard of coral not having a nervous system. You got to be the teacher today.
