does anyone know if using that kind of lighting on an acrlyic tank is even safe?
does that fans keep it really cool? because ive been near halides in the lfs and i felt like i was going to get sunburn being 3 feet away from it.

attml,
Your new lights look great!
About a year ago I upgraded the lights on my 45 from 3 30w NO's to a Hamilton hood with 175w MH and 2 90w VHO actinecs. What a difference......but I wish I had gone with the 250w MH.
Anyway, when I was acclimating my tank to my new lights I took it very slowly. I had a large hammer coral, large octo-bubble coral, some mushrooms and a cabbage coral. I was trying to avoid the shock and algea bloom I had read were possible side-effects of new lighting.
My schedule started with 3 hours a day for the MH and 4 or so for the VHO's. I increased about 1/2 and hour for each about every 3 or 4 days. At that rate of increased photoperiod, it took me about 6 weeks to increase back to full lighting which for my tank is about 9 hours for the MH and 11 for the VHO's.
I did not have any negative reaction of any kind from my fish, my corals or in increased algea growth taking it slowly, as I did.
(My only problem was not being able to view the tank with the new lights as long as I wanted to!!)
Good luck with yours!!
Jim

Dazed1 & Entice59,
You have mail!
skilos1,
Cool! You will like the National Aquarium in Baltimore! It is a great town! Make sure you get some Maryland Crab Cakes while you're here (anywhere other than Maryland that I have ever had "Maryland" crab cakes tastes nothing like the real thing!)
jim672 & mmmmsushi,
Thank you very much for the good advice! I plan on taking it slow! Since this thing is sitting right in the middle of my living room I don't want an algae nightmare!
cmpowell,
Thank you very much! Anyone that has been on this board more than a week knows I am picture happy so you can count on it! Take care!

Attml, your tank looks sweet dude! I cant tell you enough how much I agree with some of the above mentioned. I currently run two 250 watt 10k MH along with four URI 72" VHO's on a 150 gal reef. When I first got the MH a few years back I got a little excited and welded down a few corals on a one way trip with a no return. Go slow. Even just recently I shut the halides down for a week or so and I was quite shocked at the immediate bloom of new mushrooms.
