I had the first for a good year, the second I only lived about 4 months, but I think it was a dwarf species as it stopped growing at about 1" head size.

Both are very cool specimens...actually, 2 of the coolest octos I've ever seen. *jealous*.
Both remind me of a Bimac, because of the false eye rings, but they couldnt be, from what you've described.
May I ask where you got them?
If it's from another retailer, could you please email the info?...it would be appreciated.

One was from an lfs, and believe it or not, the "dwarf" one was a hitchhiker on live rock, "Jakarta" I believe. Wrecked havock on the cleanup crew before being caught. Both were VERY active and interective, eating from the hand and comming to the top of the tank and splashing water! Mabe Ive just been lucky?

I dont know what kind of petstores are in the USA, but in Canada there is a chain called Master Feeds that has them from time to time whatever species it is.

Heres a few more, I dont have many pix of the first one I had, its the yellow/brown one from before I invested in caulerpa. I always liked the pix of the lil guy pulling the heater off the side and slamming it around

Are you 100% positive on that ID or is it just an "educated guess"? Im well aware that bimacs have eyespots, but so do a number of other species of octo, although there are slight variences in the spot dynamic. Ive been "thinking" it was a bimac for some time, but the people on tonmo couldnt ID it with certainty from my pix (different ones from these posted mind you) and from the behavior I observed.

I have no idea, it was sold as "assorted caribbean star". Seems to be the same as your standard choc chip as far as care goes. And I just noticed that you can see the octo in his hole in pic #2 of the starfish

Would you happen to have a fully tank shot?

I understand, but the first pics, how the eye-spots are blue. That makes the Bimacs. the second octo has the brownesh eye-spots, which makes it something else (but still may be a Bimac).

All the pix with an eyespot and a few without are the same octo. The yellow one obviously isnt a bimac because it never had any spots, the other one has spots in some pix and not in other, and the size, color, and look of the spots changes. It also laid eggs, so it obviously reached maturity, but only got to about 2" head size, and 6" arm length which from what Ive heard is rediculously small for a bimac.

This is the only full tank shot I can find on my computer, its from the tank during the cycle. Its a standard 29g tank with about 30lbs live rock, 20lbs live sand, and the ecplise filter system with lr rubble in the filter compartment....and yes, that is my bedroom :happyfish

Definately not a Bimac. In your first set of pics...the 1st and 5th picture show the false eye spots the best. The eye spots do not resemble those of a Bimac, like the pics of mine, below.
Every Bimac I've ever seen has had the "bluish" eye spots and they werent nearly as large or defined as the ones your octo has/had.
