JBJ = Death trap???

TAKE THIS AS A WARNING ALL OF YOU WHO OWN A JBJ NANO CUBE!!!!
Hey everyone, its been forever since my last post.
My nano has been set up for 4 months now here is a run down on the stock.
I have a 24 jbj nano cube with:
30 lbs Aragonite
30 lbs LR
Mushroom coral
Green Hammer coral
Pulsing Xenia
Blue Damsel
Royal Gramma
2 percula clowns (well used to have them)
Here is my sad tale...
My two percula clowns have been in the tank around 2 months now they were doing wonderfully they hung out together near the front of the tank all the time and were always in plain site. But a few days ago they decided to start hanging out near the filter intake which on a JBJ has tiny grates that are no where near big enough for the little guys to squeeze through. Today I looked in the tank and saw my royal gramma and damsel following each other around as usual but could not find the clowns..my first guess was ...they have to be in the rock work. Well a few minutes later they still hadn't poked their heads out, trust me they are always in plain sight. So I open up the lid and what do i see in the corner of my eye, thats right two little dead perculas sitting on top of one of the sponges dry as a bone. Of course I dropped the F bomb and wondered how in the world they got in there. I pulled the sponge up that high so that there was no way for a fish to get sucked through the filter grate...if that is even possible. However it now is clear to me, or partially, that they must have jumped over the plastic seperater and landed on top of the filter. There goes $30 :( .
Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening to more live stock?...I pushed the sponge down so water is on top thats all I can really think of
Sad stuff....

They jumped over the back. Mine used to do it all the time only she would go into the chamber where the pump is. It was such a pain getting her out. I began keep the water a little lower, and I removed most of the sponges except for one and made sure it is always low enough in case of another jumper. I have live rock rubble in the second chamber with a little swim room. Sorry for your loss.

same story here cap, but now i use a skimmer that kkeps the water high in front and low in the back. I use no sponges and just have live rock rubble in the back. Havent had any trouble since i put the skimmer in. O and i keep my heater back there also. :happyfish

Sorry about the loss! One of my mated pair has gotten back there twice. Luckily the only thing in my rear chambers is LR rubble and I always try to keep a close eye on the water level back there. So I just fished him out, pardon the pun!
One thing you can try is a clear piece of plastic attached to the top of the rear chambers. Cut it so there is no clearance when the hood is closed.
Again sorry about your clowns,
Bob

my hi-finned goby also jumped the back when he was new and still skittish, but luckily there was water for him and I found him in time for a rescue mission. Sorry about your fish.

You can cover the back compartment with a cut piece of egg crate (light diffuser) that you can buy from Lowes or Home Depot. This way the fish cannot get back there and you still have good air exchange.
Sorry about your clowns.

Thanks for the warning! I would never have though to look in the back if I were missing a fish. I didn't think they could get into the back. Sorry for your loss. :(

I've got a solution thats very cheap.
I use weatherstripping back there and just double it up.
works great!

Well I first thought he was going to say his tank cracked like mine did an flooded his house, but it was crazy jumping fish. I left my hood open one night to cool of the tank and my flame hawk and gold spot goby both jumped, and 15 feet from the tank. This is all part of the hobby. I've lost about a grand when my nano cracked. I am afraid to start the new one I recived.

its not all nanos just a particular brand that has been known to have this problem.
seems to come from the fact that the way they are made creates very small hairline scratches/cracks and over time it gives way. there are far more that are fine then have broken but it does seem to be a issue thats for sure.
