How big is your tank. Do you have a skimmer? It is most likely protein and other organics that a skimmer should help get rid of. (I think)

If u dont have the money for a protien skimmer, Frequent Water changes will also remove the film.

how much are you pulling from the water with the skimmer? You might want to adlust the skimmer to try to get more of it out of the water plus skim the top of the water when you do water changes will help.
and just as a FYI thing if you spray any chemicals in the air like air freshners and febreeze or carper freshners like the vacum free stuff it can acumulate in the top of the water and should be avoided being sprayed around the tank.

I figured my issue out.. my hermit crab molted EVERYTHING (and lost a few appendages in the process...) completely. Pretty nasty. I think that's what was causing the jelly film for me, some sort of break down of the claws..I've had them molt before, but it was just shell left at the bottom of the tank. This was absolutely everything all in one shot. Still sticking together, and not falling apart when I tried to net it out, so that tells me there's some sort of fleshy stuff still in the shell.

That's not enough to cause your surface to film up. It's excess protein waste!!! Need to get more surface aggitation! Surface skimmer would work wonders!!! :happyfish
