One of the best resources for aquarists is local clubs. Most areas have them. Your LFS probably has a flyer for them. By me theres a general one, a cichlid one and a marine one. Our Marine one holds its meetings at the zoo aquarium.
These clubs are very beginner friendly. You will meet people who know everything. They have auctions of fish and/or equipment at least twice a year. I bought a 4' tall 450 GPH protein skimmer that someone made for $20 at an auction.

I can pretty much guarantee that you will learn more at one meeting than you will in a year at your LFS
