how do you plan on keeping up with calcium and alkalinity?
What do you feel are the advantages of adding strontium and iodine?
Why do you add magnesium?
Do you test for all of these?

i have to add about one full tsp of calcium buffer every week...ass for the alkalinity that really pisses me off because i have to add 1/4 tsp buffer EVERY DAY!!! just to keep it close to normal....im not sure if this is normal but its a pain
as for strontium i believe it helps in accelerating coral and calcareous algae growth….i think magnesium is an essential part of chlorophyll that is necessary for photosynthesis…. These are things I have read and heard from other people but who knows if they are really that essential…. But I have been adding them to my tank for ~4 months and everything is going well…. The directions say to add 5 mL every week but I only add 1.5 mL a week of both simply because I don’t currently have a test kit for them….
And the iodine I only add 1.5 ml every 2 weeks and the directions say 5mL….. I do have a $50 test kit for iodide and iodate but as for many other people the test results are weird.. but again I have been adding it ~4 months with good success from my tank…. Now don’t take it from me that these additives HAVE TO BE used….my tank may just be fine without any of them but from what I read natural saltwater contains certain levels of all these elements

you should really invest in test kits for strontium and magnesium if you are going to add them . . . an overdose can lead to some significant problems quickly.
Adding CA only once a week is rather little . . . most people add it once a day or every other day. adding alk buffer every day isnt really that strange, in fact its quite normal.
If you are using a high quality salt mix then you should really have no need to add anything other than ca and alk . . . the salt mix will contain everything you need.

thats good to hear about the alk....i was wondering about that... thanks.....i do test for calcium and keep it close to 450 and it will dip when im away for long periods of time....my first priority is figuring out a doser to make everything easier...

right now.. a softie tank.. [since i don't live on an ocean- this is my diving withdrawal] i need a lighting upgrade before i do anything else... though, i have plans to hook up a surge device.. with the softs.. should be pretty sweet.. and a sump to stick on...
so once i get a few more corals.. and my aquascaping done- i will definatly be putting some stuff up..

i wish i had a surge setup... those are the way to go for sure... good luck with drilling the holes.... man that scares me....make sure you pick the right lights your going to be happy with for a long time...meaning if you want to go SPS some day then look into MH....take it from me i have wasted money on different PCs and now all i want is MH.... sorry to hear you dont live on the ocean anymore....did you do alot of diving in the past??

i just go the ocean a lot. yea- i have done a lot of diving the last 7 years in the flordia keys, and hawaii. [been in the underwater hotel at key largo several times] and a lot of shore line stuff up and down the pacific northwest...
i am drilling my glass.. well, grinding it- using a dremmel and water. 1" bulkheads. the sure will have a 1" on it- though i am probably gona use a rubermaid tub for that...

already have 1 drilled on a junk 10 gallon [to test] successfully.. a good bulkhead is the key... [if you have rubbermaid surge- you don't really need to drill the main tank....]
here is a pic in process. main goal start at the center- work slowly, keep wet. notice how it chipped [ - but starting center- going to the outside, then around will save any chips from going into the tank.
i have a normal speed drill and 2 dremmel bits.. :-/ and that is about 30-40 mins of work. a dremmel drill would go much faster...

though i would not leave the fish in...
