A lot of fish can be 'jumpers'. Some are more likely to jump out of the tank than others though.. a good example is firefish and eels. Eggcrate does help. Yes Home Depot should carry it.

i neerv had a covered tank but now that i have large tank the opening are so large that i lost three fish in a month to carpet surffing. now i use the grating from lowes at 10.99 for a 2x4 sheet. i tossed up two of those(one for each opening) and no more worries.
sure wish i would have done that alittle sooner!!

All species of gobies can be jumpers. Also IMO opinion instead of getting eggcrate i would get a glass top. eggcrates still allow the possibility to jumpers.

bad idea. less light/less gas exchange/less evap/less heat exchange/ all = a less healthy tank.

canopy will work to a point but there is still a large open back. if you close in tehr back then you are back to the heat issue and it can be assumed that a fish jumping right into a hot bulb is not the nicest experience. the grate is the best choice. a fish would have to be very small to get through the holes not to mention that it would have to jump perfectly straight up to get through. the grat allows light to be un-interupted, evap is un-halted. and gas exchange is left to its business. now if you have no hood at all the only down side i can find is that it is not the most eye pleasing choice.

I use glass tops too on my 55, but Oceana quoted this
"bad idea. less light/less gas exchange/less evap/less heat exchange/ all = a less healthy tank."
What do you think of it? We're gonna be getting a larger tank sometime down the road and we want to be sure we use the right thing, I personally think egg crates look bad too. If anyone else has an opinion of it, please do say something!!! :happyfish

why doesnt anyone just go buy plexiglass sheets or clear plastic sheets and drill openings in the top. itll prevent fish from jumping, let light through, gas exchange, and prevent expencive power compacts from getting all wet.

That actually sounds like a good idea, but with the strong lighting and heat, wouldn't that melt the plastic?

I was thinking of egg crete too . I have seen some that looks like its chromed. but was discouaged by the fact of getting 400 w MH's I didn't want to melt it.
molten plastic couldn't be good for fish.

But you can't scrub plexi glass, it'll scratch. Can't clean it with razor blade either, it'll scratch up. It'll get salt creep and you can't really clean that off really well on a plexi glass. Just my thought! :happyfish

thats true, but i rather replace the plexiglass every once in awhile instead of a $300 power compact.

I use a canopy. The opening in the back and sides are easily fixed by using a screen. This allows:1. Easy access to tank. 2. Easy airflow. 3. Plenty of room to mount lights, fans, etc. Any fish jumping all the way into the light is going to bounce right back down into the tank.
