Jumping Fish?

I realize some fish jump. I had to take my glass covers off (got MH lights) and put eggcrate on instead...do you think the fish can jump thru those little holes? I hope not...what else could my options be?

I'm sure they still could, especially if you have fire fish, but you should still drastically reduce the possibility of them carpet diving.

i have two fire fish with a open top tank and have had both of the more over 6 months and either of them have ever jumped out. they are always swimming at the bottom of the tank and if they get scared they dart into they're rock.

most fish wont jump unless its stressed or just got out by accident. the chance of a fish jumping is very slim.

my lfs has a 1200 gallon dt they say the fish only jump during business hours.
so they dont die someone finds them and put them back.
at night nobody scares them so they dont jump.

you could make a mesh cover for your tank. smaller holes than eggcrate.

It has to be heat resistant...I had screen and the MH lights made it hot.

i wouldnt say a slim chance. I just got a whip fion fairy wrasse 3 weeks ago and found him on the floor yesterday.

I've wondered about the jumping thing myself. I am sure stress makes them more prone to jump but do you think that is the main reason fish jump? I've had a few jump and while I can't honestly tell you if they were stressed or not I never saw anything bothering them.

it depends on where in the water level the fish is spooked at. In my first tank, i had a firefish with an open top for about 8 months. but then my evil pseudochromis (before i used a fish trap to take him out) attacked the firefish when he was at the top. so its mostly just the wrong time and wrong place when something like that happens.

I laid on my couch 2 nights ago and watched my yellow watchman jump into the overflow. Somehow it didn't get sucked into the sump, but it was a pain in the butt to fish out (ha). I also thought I'd lost a clown once and later found him in my sump, swimming happily. I've never seen him jump, but he must have to get down there! I'd like a solution to some kind of cover on my overflow! I'm scared that if I just cover it up they'll just have a flat, dry surface to land on. At least now they're staying in the water. I have a canopy, so they really can't get too far... just into the overflow.
I've had 3 jumpers total, but it's been over almost a 2 year span... and only one of them died.
