Maybe to a miniscule degree.
However, do you keep humans in the house? It has been known to be toxic for those.

I smoke and I haven't noticed any changes to my tank what so ever. I am sure the tank gets a little more carbon dioxide than normal. everything in my tank is thriving.

It depends on how much smoke we are talking about if the person is a heavy smoker it will mostly likely find its way to the tank.

Hmm, I am a smoker, just not in the house.
I think we're just trying to have fun. No harm was intended. Sorry, really.

chill dude we were just having fun I feel sorry if you cant find the humer in our post and why attack the site You have what 6 people taking light of the thread. I have allways heard that you should not smoke in the same area as a open top tank cuz the smoke can settle on the tank but once agin there was no pun directed to you nor should there have been

Relax, gasman. I actually got a pretty good chuckle out of some of the remarks that were made. Loosen up.
Is secondhand smoke beneficial to a tank? Obviously not. Is it harmful (your original question)? THAT is very debatable and a very valid question.
Most purists will undoubtably tell you that ANY contaminant is harmful. reckler has no problems with his/her tank.
I really don't have an answer, but I do have some insight. As with any contaminant, observe how many opportunities your tank has to get maximum exposure from cigarette smoke. An open top tank will absorb "some" smoke- air isn't heavy enough to break surface tension effectively, but smoke is heavier than air. If you run any air pumps or venturis, the smoke will get directly injected into the water.
I'm sure that someone will support the argument one way or the other, backed up with data.
Until then, try to SMILE.

gasman, i beleive the expression you were looking for is blow it out your a** not stick it, in all seriousness, we were all just having some fun, my wife and i are both smokers (we no longer smoke in the house because of our 2 young kids (3 yr old + 8 month old) but when we did smoke in the house i noticed no ill effects to my tank, now we did not smoke in the same room, as was one of my rules* so to speak, but we are both heavy smokers and it seemed to effect it very little
