Alright I just bought all the stuff for my 40g tank. I got a 300 watt titanium heater (hope its not too big for my tank), a Berlin turbo hang-on skimmer, portable refractometer, a net, a python no spill clean hose, a fasTesT testing kit (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH), a power sweep 214 wavemaker, and a 160 gph maxi-jet pwerhead. And of course my light head and bulb which I may upgrade it to something that can sustain coral and anemones like a mh light. I just wanted to make sure everything was okay and once I get all my stuff hooked up I'll order my 50 lb. of lr and my ls. How many lb. of ls should I have for a good deep snad bed?. Also I'm going to use distilled water. Could I keep a mated pair of firefish, a school of 3 or 5 chromis, a pair of clowns, and one dwarf angel in that tank? Along with 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 peppermint shrimp, a colony of dusters, 2 or 3 clams, 20 snail, 20 hermits, and maybe some anemones and corals if I upgrade my lighting? Well just making sure everthing good before (after my tank cycles) I add the fish.:happyfish

Here's a website that will help you calculate how much sand you need:

If you want clams, you need MH lights. They need very strong lights, like anenomes or SPS corals.
I think the angel might not work in a 40 gallon tank. I have heard they need at least 55. You may want to get other opinions on that, though.

That thing says for my tank 36Lx18W and to have a 4 inch sand bed I would need 135 pounds assuming the sand I want to get weighs 90 lbs. per square ft. (that setting was already in so I didn't touch it). I dunno but 135 lbs. seems like a lot of sand to me. I think I'll wait for a second opinnion other than that site.

So only clams anemones and SPS corals need MH lights? So if I got another type of coral other than SPS corals, would my flourescent lights work?
