phil, i just got some mushrooms a few days back too. mine didn't open up for a while. just give them a few days. i also read that they are photosynthetic so they get most of thier needs from your lights but they accept bits of photoplankton and phytoplankton. also i'm pretty sure you can start spreding them yourself... seen a few people do that on here.

No offense - but "I just got this, what do I need to know" threads always make me cringe.
Research before purchasing, in this hobby impulse buying can be really bad.

Impulse buying bad..nah, nope uh uh........anyone want a BLue Devil..........FREE.
Mushrooms are easy keepers. Some will tolerate lots of light other will not most are not too choosey. Just give them a few days to acclimate and get used to different water, lights etc.......theyw ill get balled up., curled up, wrinkled up , shrunk up and all kids of other weird things........but don't despair its just the mushroom thing.......They are pretty darn hardy and will take a lot without hurting them. I dropped one (nice blue) and thought it fell back in the tank......well it was stepped on numerous times while i was searching for where that shroom went.......then the wife spotted it on the floor, covered in lint and doggie hair......wiped it up best we could, placed it in tank, and next moring it was looking a bit perkier, and within a few more days you could not tell anything ever happened to it.........No real need to add additional food, as they are photosynthetic.......Top make more slice them directly through ther center making sure each piece has a portion of the mouth.......they recover good.
I acquired a nice shroom, that was huge, and on its attached rock base it had another small white shroom, totally devoid of any color...just white........It was being shaded by the large shroom and how it was placed in the tank it never got any light........since it was still firm and not rotted we separated it off the rock, and placed it in a good spot.........sufficient light not too strong, no flow.....It is now doing pretty good and is a weird color, but it stretches and pumps itself up, and the mouth is a light lime green with the outer portion still a white color.........So just give those shrooms some time and they will be ok.

I have a rock of green 'shrooms that initially was doing GREAT in my tank and in the spot that I have them now. Well, since their introduction into the tank, I have upgraded my lights, and (due to circumstances beyond my control) the temp spiked to 86 from 80 during the course of 1 day (this has since been remedied). Since these 2 occurrences, my mushrooms are looking shriveled and really unhappy. I've kept them in the same spot as before, and I'm wondering if moving them would be a bad move.
All my other corals are doing super!! I have branching zoos, pink zoos, a devil's hand leather, and a small ricordea...none are showing any signs of being stressed or otherwise compromised.
Any suggestions?
By the way Phil, Congratulations!!! It's so exciting to move along and see more and more life in your tank, isn't it? Best of luck with your new 'shrooms.

Mushrooms don't eat phytoplankton...they are not filter feeders. They will accept the occasional meaty food, pellet, or flake that lands on them. Their main means of nourishment is lighting, which they don't need much of.

I'm moving mine tomorrow when I do my water change then. I keep thinking that the lighting at this point is just too much for them.
Thanks Mud, I'll let you know how it goes.

Yup, they don't need much lighting at all. Actually, they can even survive under the bulbs supplied by factory hoods. They just won't grow or reproduce at all. I'm not sure what lighting you have Mona, but I have mh, and my shrooms do well at a low/shaded part of my live rock.

Thanks Mud,
I just placed my 'shroom rock lower in the tank (had them pretty high before) so I have my fingers crossed that they're going to be okay.
How are your mushrooms doin' Phil?
