my lfs uses the api basic test set too and also check the salt with the refractometer. when they test your ph it will always be low. the only good thing about having them check you water is that at least you can prove to them that your waters are good. and if you buy a fish there and somethign happens it may be more likley they will work with you in an exhange or something.

Nah, it isn't pointless. Test kits in this hobby vary greatly. Testing your parameters on two different kits will give you a better idea as to what they are.

sure its good to test on two different tests provided they are made by different manufactures. perhaps i should have said its pointless to have your lfs test your water if they use the same test kit as you.

I did 40% water changes daily when cycling my tank. I used up a couple bags of salt but nothing came back to life. Like they say on here, once the ammonia gets to a certain point there is no point to changing water.
