Just getting started

Hello,
I am new and thought that I would tell you what I know so that I can ask questions when I think of good enough ones.
First off, A week and ahalf ago I saw what I thought was a great thing. A 150 gal tank with everything including the fish for $450.(turns out the tank is 125 gal.) So I jump on the opportunity and drive an hour away to see this tank. I get there and for the price I thought it would do.
It had a stand the man made himself, not to nice but it does the job. about 40 lbs of rock that might have been live a long time ago. A wet/dry trickle filter that really needed some cleaning. The tank had small scratches on the glass from it being cleaned with the wrong tool. The canopy is rotting and the hidges rusted and the bulbs are cheap shop lights. Came with 3 power heads, one did not work. One heater. And three fish. There had been no water change in about 6 months. crushed coral substrate, gross and dirty.
The first fish being a striped puffer a little over 9 inches long. The second a black and white damsel with three black stripes about 2.5 inches long. And the third is a snowflake eel about 26 inches long.
With everything to complain about I still thought that it was an oppurtunity so I jumped on it and moved the tank to my house the next day.
I cleaned everything before setting it back up with a good rinse. I tried to keep all of the water(ended up doing about a 45% water change in the process), I used a converter to run a heater and a power head in the car for the cooler I transported the critters in.(seemed to do well). the fish were in there for about 12 hours in which time the tank was set up and running around 6:45 am. I made sure the salinity and the tempature was the same before putting them into the new home. The fish did not seem to go into shock at all. They all are show offs. I fed them a day after they had gotten used to the tank with the light off. Every one ate but the eel(which is a concern although he still shows off and is very curious).
I have not decided what to keep in this tank yet or if I will keep the fish that came with it. Puffers are very aggressive and like to taste everything. What other kind of fish could be with it???
The tempeture is about 79 degrees. What is a good temp.?
The salinity: 1.015(if I am reading it right)
use destilled water to top it off
planning another water change for next week
Any input or suggestions welcome to anything!
I am about to buy RO water filter and testing kits not sure exactly what I need.
I know I need ph, nitrite and nitrate, salinity, need advice....
I have been wanting to set up an aquarium for 7 years have been patient and know am trying to just start.
I found another deel in the newspaper a couple days ago and so I bought a 180 gal. for $250. 60x24x28 I believe. want to make it into a reef tank. It will be a slow process I have to save up for everything. Came with just the tank and a broken filter and some bio balls. It may need to be resealed.
I want to know the best way to clean it and how to reseal it and what I should use to reseal it.
I know I ask a lot, but I am a good student and will learn quickly.
Thank you
P.S.
sorry about the spelling. Is there a spell check?

Your temp is good, your Your salinity is low, for a fish only,I think it should be at 1.23, for reef at 1.25. Buy more live rock,1 1/2 lbs per. gal.RO/DI unit is a good thing.

Does anyone have imformation on test kits?
Can someone walk me through resealing a tank?

for a fish only id prefer to see the salinity around .018-.019
I like it at this salinity because you have a 0% chance of ick
Reading salinity get a refractometer their much better and can trust them
Hydrometers are not as accurete unless you get a glass one
you also will need a amonia test kit
Dont worry bout the Sfe he might fast for a week or so
You will need protein skimmers for both tanks
A bigger one for the reef
and for the reef i would recomend live sand instead of C.C. (crushed coral.
And for the fish only tank id like to see less L.R. (live rock)
A trigger would be nice in your agressive tank. Id stick with the pinktail, bluethroat, crosshatch, and sargasim, but the picasso is B-E-A-utiful (their hit and miss tho) (you will see a really nice picasso then youll see one that will make the tanks his tank only)
And a wrasse Harlequin tusk, are beutiful only get australian (little pricy) but worth it

Definately need a refracto. I would add more rock to the FOWLR better bio-filtration and more hiding spots for the fish. Go with sand in both tanks and ditch the CC. Again better bio-filtration and the sand will not collect as much waste as the CC. If you stick with the CC make sure you vacuum it. You need skimmers for both. What kind of flow/pumps did you get? What kind of lights did you get?
You can clean the tank with a diluted white vinegar solution and then cut out all the old silicone, clean agian making sure that all is removed (razor blade) and run new beads inside. Try to only remove the corners don't get in between the glass. Tape off 1/2"-3/4" from the corners and run the bead finish with a wet finger and pull the tape. Nice and neat. Only use 100% silicone. I ordered some from my LFS from All glass and paid 8 bucks a tube. I just don't trust the Homey Depot stuff but others have used it with out a problem.

You got some darn good deals!!! Sealing the tank is like what is mentioned above. For FO tank I would add more LR like what was mentioned above, better filtration, but not to over crowd it though, those fish needs room to swim. Since those aggressive fish are pretty large, I would get one at a decent size to go with'em, make sure you QT all new arrivals, so it would be nice for you to look for another tank for QT, doesn't have to be super big, just something that would fit your fish. Skimmer is a must for either tanks!!! You can find some pretty reasonable priced canopy built for you, or you can built one yourself. If you want to do Reef in that 180, get a large sump/fuge to go along with it. IF it's not drilled, better look for a overflow box as well, or you can always have a glass shop drill it for you. Lots of reading on reef is required, it's a lot more maintenance then a FOWLR. Good Luck and welcome to the forum!!! :happyfish

I found a 55 gal and a 30 gal for $60. So I plan to use the 30 gal for the Q tank and the 55 gal for a sump/fuge for the reef tank.
How much does it cost to get a hole drilled in your tank?
Does it benefit the tank to have it drilled?
Thanks for all the help.

Depending on how much your local glass shop would charge you. If it's tempered glass, it can't be drilled....Having a drilled tank let you do the sump/fuge without an overflow box, just better for the view that's all. :happyfish
