i just got my skimmer that i ordered yesterday from a ....warehouse of reef things.....i got the reef devil super skimmer deluxe. it looks great.
thank you psuscr for helpin me pick a skimmer. it fits in my sump barely but it still fits and i was thinking i wouldnt be able to. i cant wait to have it going. ill post pictures and let everyone know how it is....
i have a few questions tho...
1...the injector just slides in and out really easy and im scared that if i leave it runnin and walk away it will pop off and water will be everywhere....is there a way im supposed to secure it down?
2. what do the bio balls do in the skimmer? the same thng in a wet dry?

the injector is fine..I have had mine for 6 days now. It stays in fine. The bioballs break up the water flow and create bubbles in the tower. No detrious will form on them cause the water is moving to fast.
I just put up a post with some pics and a video from mine...
it will take a while to start, so be patient. Mine took almost 96 hours to start foaming.

ok so ursure it wont pop off? can i put some tape around it? maybe if i cut the hose shorter from the pump it wont be able to pop off right? its kinda long..
how much did u open up the gate when u first started it?
thanks for the quick reply..

open the gate so that the bubbles go up the tube about 1". it says this in the instructions.
One thing the instructions dont say, and I only learned after calling Ae tech is that you should rinse the whole thing very well and they suggested running it in 1:1 vinegar/ water for a couple of hours before use. Said it will start up faster that way. I didnt do that and it took a long time to start.
The injector is fine, dont worry about it, but I wouldn't think a piece of tape of would hurt.

i cut the tube so now the pump is a tiny bit off the ground so it would have to lift the pump to pop off....problem solved..
thanks for the help. ill post some pictures tomorrow for anyone that wanted to see...

ya nice video

it is still at like 2 or 3" today with the gate openned up all the way...what should i do?
do you have your gate valve pointing strait up? i do and its making alot of bubbles but it says to do that if you dont have a auto top off because the water level flux....

joncat 24, I am designing my sump/fuge and wondered, what model is that skimmer (delux, or the regular reef devil) and what is total foot print (size, inches) in your sump? I want to make sure I have enough room for the skimmer, pump, and piping along with the intake valve. I think I am going to go with a reef devil, but for a 90 gallon would you suggest the standard or the deluxe?
Thanks all,

The dimensions are on etss website. I think it is 7 "round . I would go with the deluxe just for the fact that it comes with the drilled cup for a drain line. and it has a little more tower area. 2" I believe.

but i cant get my skimmer to have to the water level that low!.... and...should i have the gate all the way open or what?
when i had my proclear 75 skimmer on it was skimming out alot of crap and this one hasnt done anything yet.
so i just need to no where i should have the water level at now? and how much should i have the gate open?

it wont do anything for a couple of days or maybe more. It has to get an organic coat built up inside. open or close the valve to get the water where you want it...adjust the angle of the valve so it is just at tghe water line. I like the angle better than straight up (less bubbles) and easier to maintain level. Get that done....AND DON'T TOUCH IT. let it go for a while and break in, it will be fine. I went through the same thing I am just a week ahead of ya, and a couple of calls to AE tech. LOL

no skim yet...not even bubbles going near the cup. i know it need to be broken in but how much should i turn the gate?

your outlet valve is way too high. It is supposed to be at or near the water level. You will not get any foam or bubbles going toward the cup at all for a couple of days.
Look up at my pics....spin the whole assembly to the right until the sponge is halfway under....then rotate the actual rea handle up so it is sticking out of the water. make it look like my pic

and you better get a drain line on that drain fitting or you are gonna have a mess when it does start up

take your time, i promise you it will be alright.. just relax and like said you dont want the valve open you want it pretty much closed so you block it up and the buibbles take over, not the water
