to boost the depth of the sand bed in my tank, this is all sand that was in another tank that got broken down and sat dry for a while so I am going to cycle it, do some serious WC's on it, get it established, then add it to my DT to bring my depth up to true DSB levels.

Ever thought of doing the 5g bucket full of sand that sits in a sump with water flowing into bucket and then into sump? I think I'm going to go this route with anther frag tank I'm setting up.

if the bucket had 6-7 inches of sand you would have a great mini dsb, I dont know how effective it would be over 8 inches of sand depth. I havent ever heard any research on superdeep sand beds, but it would be great for anaerobic bacteria either way. plunk a chunk of LR on top to keep the water flowing in from kicking up the sand and you have an idea there.

here is a shot of my 12 g you can see the cut red chunks of ball sponge and the two little pieces of red tree that I just got. having a little red slime growth but its because I got it up and running so fast with a shortcut cycle and not really enough flow. but everything is looking good. the mushrooms love this tank they have almost doubled in size since I changed it over to a regular nano from the frag shelving set up I had.

I'll see if I can dig up the article about using 5g buckets in a sump as a DSB alternative, basic idea was that bucket had x# of inches of sand and sat in the sump, then a maxijet 900 PH pumped water from the sump into the top of the bucket. I can't remember if he drilled holes in the side of the bucket or just let the water spill over the top, either way it's good for aerating the tank and if you have heat issues it could help lower temp, but evaporation is going to be a problem............The guy came up with the idea because his DSB crashed (don't they all at some point?) and this way he could simply yank the bucket out if there was a problem.......I also think he had some macro and livestock that actually stayed inside the bucket with a small 9w light for lighting...Oh yeah, he actually had 2 5g buckets...I'm actually going to install this on my newest 80g frag tank that goes in next week, I'll post pics

Do you think having a bucket like that would make much difference? You are doing that for anaerobic respiration to decrease nitrates correct?
I'm missing something. I can understand running a plenum in the bucket with larger grain substrate but if water is just flowing in from the top then out of the top, where do you benefit?

its like having a DSB in a controlled area, the top layer is aerobic the flow through the top is bringing the nitrates into the bucket so the anaerobic bacteria has access to it, to complete the denitrification, it would be a way to have sand in a baffless sump, or a sump lacking fuge space.

holy crap, I just did an ammonia test on the tank of sand that is cyceling. the result was 6.1+ thats as high as my test goes, I have never actually seen an ammonia test turn dark blue before. WOW. it has only been cycling for 1 day. I am guessing that I dont need to add an ammonia source to initiate a cycle.

Thanks, I've added it to my "must have" coral list.
How big was it when you first got it. Do you have to spot feed or does it do well on it's own?

just light no spot feeding. I sent you a PM. it was about 3" (this is a guess) smaller when I got it 8 months ago, the better the lighting the faster it grows.

ammonia in the sand tank is now .6 coming along nicely. cant wait to add it to my DT (ugh, remove everything add sand wait for it to clear then place everything back in the tank compensating for the height difference). probably another week or two and my tank will look totaly different, as wel all you you move that much stuff and you'll never make it look the same.
